🌟 Inspiration
The idea for Molecule-Forge was born from a desire to revolutionize the way researchers approach molecular design and drug discovery. With NVIDIA releasing powerful AI models capable of generating molecules, we saw an opportunity to combine this with a user-friendly platform that could empower scientists to accelerate breakthroughs. The inspiration came from a blend of AI innovation and the need to simplify the complex, time-consuming process of molecular generation.
🧬 What it does
Molecule-Forge is an AI-powered platform that enables researchers to generate, visualize, and manage molecular structures. Users can input SMILES strings, configure generation parameters, and view real-time models of the resulting molecules. It also provides features like:
- Secure authentication and user profiles
- Team collaboration and molecule sharing
- Analytics dashboards for research tracking
- History logs for generated molecules
🏗️ How we built it
We combined a modern full-stack web architecture with powerful APIs and tools:
- Frontend: Built with Next.js 14, TypeScript, Tailwind CSS, DaisyUI, and Framer Motion for a sleek and responsive UI.
- Backend: Utilized MongoDB, NextAuth.js, and Prisma for secure user management and data storage.
- AI Integration: Leveraged NVIDIA’s molmin API for real-time molecular generation and analysis.
- Real-Time Features: Integrated Ably for live updates and collaborative research functionality.
🧗 Challenges we ran into
- Complex API Handling: Integrating NVIDIA's molmin API required robust error handling and optimization for parameter tuning.
- Rendering: Ensuring smooth, real-time visualization of molecules in the browser took significant experimentation with libraries.
- Scalability: Designing a scalable, secure multi-user system with protected routes and real-time data sync posed technical challenges.
- Collaboration Tools: Building real-time research collaboration from scratch was tricky, especially with live syncing and group management.
🏅 Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Created a fully functional AI-powered molecule generator with real-time visualization.
- Enabled seamless research collaboration through real-time syncing and team management.
- Delivered a clean, modern user experience optimized for both novice and experienced researchers.
- Built a comprehensive dashboard with detailed molecule analytics and history tracking.
