Inspiration

The Queer Community has always held a special fascination for me. Growing up in a religious household, I often contemplated the challenges these individuals face as they navigate their lives, particularly because many of them come from similar religious backgrounds like mine. It saddens me that they are told their very existence is prohibited by our religious beliefs. However, as I delved deeper into our holy books, I discovered a rich tapestry that revealed the Queer Community has always been an integral part of our religion. They have been depicted as warriors, gods, goddesses, kings, and queens. How is it then that they are perceived as a negative influence on society? It all boils down to a lack of understanding and knowledge.

This realization ignited a profound motivation within me to work towards enlightenment, so that the LGBTQIA+ community can feel a deep sense of pride in themselves and their religion. I believe it is crucial for people to educate themselves about the history of the queer community, to embrace their contributions, and to recognize them as an integral part of our society. By fostering a climate of awareness and acceptance, we can pave the way for a more inclusive future where everyone can celebrate their true selves without fear or discrimination.

Together, we can embark on a journey of transformation, where religion and queer identity coexist harmoniously. Let us strive to bridge the gap between ignorance and understanding, fostering empathy and respect for all individuals, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity. By doing so, we can create a world where love, compassion, and unity flourish, allowing each person to celebrate their unique journey while embracing the diverse tapestry that is humanity.

How we built it

Our website, "Moksh," beautifully showcases the LGBTQIA+ community's beauty within our religion. We utilize JavaScript, CSS, and HTML, along with APIs like Google Maps and Echo 3D. Google Maps marks pride events globally, while Echo 3D offers an immersive AR meditation experience. Through this blend of technology and spirituality, we empower LGBTQIA+ individuals and foster pride in their religious identities.

Challenges we ran into

Creating our website posed significant challenges as we navigated the sensitive and expansive topics of LGBTQIA+ and religion. The foremost obstacle was deciding which features to include, given the complexity of both subjects. Additionally, we faced difficulties in translating Sanskrit stories and shlokas accurately, ensuring their meaning was faithfully conveyed in English. This task was of utmost importance to us. Finally, integrating all the pages with their respective resources proved to be a time-consuming and intricate endeavor, requiring careful attention to detail. Despite these challenges, we persevered, driven by our commitment to creating a meaningful and cohesive platform.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are immensely proud of how Moksh has come together. Despite our initial concerns about adding numerous features, they have only served to amplify the significance of our platform. Additionally, we made a deliberate decision to integrate various Google language translation tools, ensuring that individuals from diverse linguistic backgrounds can easily access and comprehend the content. This adaptation has made Moksh more inclusive and accessible to people from different walks of life.

What we learned

Moksh is not only a website but also a literary masterpiece. Through its creation, we discovered hidden gems within our own culture and the vibrant stories of the queer community. Moreover, the process of building Moksh expanded our technical expertise by incorporating API integrations and introducing new features such as Google language translation and AR development. It has been a transformative journey of both cultural exploration and technical growth.

What's next for Moksh

While Moksh currently focuses on Hinduism, we strongly believe that every religion possesses a rich history regarding LGBTQIA+ individuals. Looking ahead, we are committed to expanding Moksh's scope to include other religions such as Christianity, Buddhism, Jainism, and more. Our goal is to create a comprehensive platform that explores and celebrates the diverse intersections of queer identities within different faith traditions. By broadening the sources of Moksh, we aim to foster greater understanding, acceptance, and inclusivity across religious boundaries.
