🛡️ Inspiration
Moderating hyper-active subreddits can be a nightmare. When controversial posts go viral, thousands of toxic comments pour in within minutes. Human moderators face immense mental exhaustion and burnout while trying to clean up these “comment cascades” manually. We created ModShield AI to protect both communities and the mental well-being of the moderators who run them.
✨ What it does
ModShield AI is a native Reddit Devvit app that acts as an automated shield for subreddits:
- Cascade Breaker: Monitors comment velocity. If a post suddenly gets a massive spike in comments, it auto-isolates the thread and routes new comments to a review queue.
- Native Mod HUD: Provides an interactive control panel right inside the Reddit post for moderators to purge, freeze, or handle threads with a single click.
- Burnout Router: Monitors mod activity. If a moderator has been filtering toxic queues for over 45 minutes, it prompts them to take a 10-minute break and intelligently routes urgent tickets to other active mods.
⚙️ How we built it & Technical Architecture
The conceptual blueprint is designed around the Reddit Devvit SDK, utilizing:
- Event lifecycles: Triggers hooked into
onCommentCreatedandonPostCreatedto evaluate real-time velocity metrics. - Data infrastructure: Devvit’s low-latency Key-Value Store (
context.kvStore) with rolling 120-second TTL windows to track comment spikes. - UI canvas: Devvit Blocks (Stacks, Text, Buttons) for a seamless in-app overlay HUD.
📚 What we learned
We learned how important it is to design moderation tools around real human pain points, not just automation for the sake of automation. We also learned how to scope a hackathon project into a focused, practical workflow that could realistically help moderators during high-pressure situations. Most importantly, we learned how to turn a last-minute setback into a clear, execution-ready product vision.
🛑 Challenges we faced
This project faced a critical emergency when our team's core developer had to drop out at the absolute last minute due to unforeseen circumstances. With no access to a laptop and limited time, I refused to give up on this vision. I adapted immediately, turning ModShield AI into a fully fleshed-out, comprehensive Product & Technical Specification Concept. This submission represents a complete, execution-ready blueprint for the Reddit community.
🏆 What’s next for ModShield AI
We want to partner with active Reddit Devvit developers to bring this exact architecture to life, run beta testing across high-traffic subreddits, and officially launch it on the Reddit App Directory to save mods from burnout worldwide.
