Inspiration
Reddit moderators manage millions of posts daily with minimal tools. They face a critical pain point: scattered visibility into community health. Without a unified view, mods miss emerging problems—toxicity spikes, spam floods, and rule violations happen in real-time while mods are checking individual posts.
We were inspired by how emergency response teams use command centers with live dashboards to see the full picture instantly. Moderators deserve the same intelligence. ModPulse brings that military-grade situational awareness to Reddit.
The problem became crystal clear: mods need ONE place to see:
- Is the community healthy right now?
- What needs immediate action?
- Are we keeping up with the volume?
- What patterns are emerging?
What it does
ModPulse is a real-time moderation dashboard installed directly on Reddit subreddits. It displays:
- Community Health Score - A single number (0-100) reflecting post velocity, toxicity, removal rate, and mod response time
- Live Activity Metrics - Post submissions per hour (24h and 7-day trends) with spike detection
- Report Pressure - Toxicity meter showing how many posts get flagged and mod action rates
- Post Queue - All flagged posts sorted by severity, with recommended actions
- Mod Team Dashboard - Who took what action, response latencies, leaderboard
- Shift Coordination - Mods pass notes about ongoing issues to the next shift
- Watchlist - Track repeat offenders and problematic users
- Smart Suggestions - AI-generated removal templates based on rule categories (spam, harassment, misinformation, etc.) with confidence scores
How we built it
Key Technical Decisions
Demo Data Architecture - We built a seeded random generator so the dashboard works without Reddit API calls during development. This is production-ready—swap out
generateDemoData()for real subreddit metrics API calls instantly.Real-Time Polling - Frontend polls
/api/metricsevery 10 seconds. Scheduler refreshes data every 15 minutes. Zero latency for users viewing live.Modular Components - Each metric (health score, sparkline chart, toxicity meter) is a isolated React component with zero dependencies. Easy to extend.
Human-First Copy - Redesigned UI to speak like a real mod, not a robot. No emojis near headings.
Severity-Based Sorting - Action queue auto-sorts by impact. Critical posts float to top. Mods don't hunt for urgent items.
Challenges we ran into
1. Real-Time Performance at Scale
Rendering 50+ posts in the queue, animating sparklines, updating health scores every 10 seconds—all in a browser webview.
Challenge: React re-renders and animation jank.
Solution:
- Staggered animations (
animation-delay: 0.05s * index) so browser doesn't max out - Memoized components to prevent unnecessary re-renders
- SVG sparklines with pathLength animation (GPU-accelerated)
- Severity score bars use CSS transitions instead of JS intervals
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Designing for Real Mod Workflows
- Building Without External UI Libraries
- Real Time Lag Free Performance
What we learned
Architecture Matters More Than Features - The demo data layer is our superpower. We can pivot to real data.
Mods Are Pragmatists - Speed + clarity wins..
Responsive Design Isn't Optional - Mods view this on phone while moderating. Mobile layout had to be just as functional as desktop. Flexbox was a lifesaver.
What's next for ModPulse
ModPulse is a functional prototype with demo data. We can install it, see real dashboards, understand workflows instantly.
Next Plan (With Reddit API):
- Replace demo generator with Reddit API calls (posts, comments, reports, users)
- Add machine learning for better rule violation detection
- Integrate with AutoModerator for action automation
