Inspiration
We had the inspiration to do this project from the multitude of social media users that seek fashion advice from major icons in the fashion industry. Our goal is to create a centralized space for people to get fashion tips from the leaders in the industry, and also our AI specialist!
What it does
If you know Fiverr, our app, Modista, connects muses (people looking for fashion tips) and modistes (stylists) together where both parties can benefit. Modistes can charge rates for their fashion tips, and there are plenty of people out there that would be willing to pay a small amount for some fashion advice with their wardrobe. We also have a built in AI Fashion advisor that is able to use machine learning algorithms to detect different clothing items and suggest possible outfits the user can wear straight from their wardrobe.
How we built it
We built this with a Flutter frontend, using Dart, and a Flask backend with MongoDB as our cloud database. For our machine learning algorithm we used keras to properly identify and suggest articles of clothing to wear.
Challenges we ran into
We had a lot of issues working with images, and still have many issues we have to work out, as it was our first time doing something of this scale with so many different features. While we have some mobile development experience, none of us have used Flutter before, so it was challenging learning how this new technology worked, but it was definitely worthwhile since we learned a lot.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We got to build a base skeleton for our app that outlines the purpose of what we envision for this app. A lot of work went into creating our interface from scratch with 0 dart/flutter knowledge, and we're really proud of the amount we accomplished in 24 hours! We had to start really late due to other commitments and a last-minute switching of the project, but we definitely had a lot of fun and got to create a lot.
What we learned
We definitely learned a lot about flutter and how to program and dart, which will be useful for any future mobile projects!
What's next for Modista
We want to continue this project after the hackathon, since we think it's a good marketable product we can bring out to the real world. There's lots of opportunities for expansion, such as
- Improving our ML algorithm and accuracy with a bigger dataset
- Improving our UI design and accessibility
- Allowing for more customization and freedom in an styling order
- Enabling our genAI assistant to do more
Of course, as more features get implemented, more will get ideated, so we can't wait to get working on finishing this project!
