Inspiration
The first inspiration was my girlfriend, even though the app ended up quite different from what she originally asked for 😅 She was looking for an app to track her daily moods (yes, plural) she wanted the ability to log more than one mood per day. She also wanted a widget on the Home Screen so she could quickly log her moods throughout the day. That got me thinking about how to handle multiple moods in a single day. I wanted to associate a color with each mood, and from there, the idea of mixing colors together felt natural. I started experimenting with shaders (I'm no expert, but I really enjoy playing with them), and I realized that mixing just two colors worked best. Anything more would turn into a mess without much meaning. Later, my girlfriend also asked if she could add a photo, and that’s when everything clicked: a colored sphere with a photo inside. Like a little frozen memory. Yes, it’s totally inspired by the movie Inside Out, but I couldn't find any app that did this, so I decided to make one. Because honestly, the idea of a mood sphere is just super cool.
What it does
Modi is a MO-od DI-ary, where you can log 1 or 2 moods per day, add a photo, and write a short description. Using all that information, Modi creates a Mood Sphere to represent your day.
How I built it
I'm a big fan (and kind of an expert) of Flutter, so choosing it was obvious, especially because I needed some more advanced features for the Mood Sphere and export functions.
Challenges I ran into
The biggest challenge was definitely the Mood Sphere. It took me many days to get it right. It might look simple, but it’s not. There are two mid size shaders involved and several layers working together to make it look the way it does. In the beginning, I didn’t even know exactly what I wanted, I just had an image in my head. So I had to experiment a lot to bring it to life.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
The overall look of the app. For the first time, I went with a fully dark mode design. Normally, I avoid going all-in on dark mode, because it can cause readability issues, especially outdoors. But this time, I wanted to create a dreamy atmosphere, and dark mode was essential. I even added some subtle particles in the background to make it feel more "ephemeral."
What I learned
That a dark mode only app can actually make sense More about app monetization and marketing And definitely more about shaders!
What's next for Modi - Mood Diary
I’ve got tons of ideas for expanding Modi. A lot of features could be added: like the ability to add Live Photos or short videos inside the Mood Sphere. Or making the share feature create even cooler images or videos. It would also be great to add more sharing options directly within the app. Right now, I'm just looking forward to getting the first wave of user feedback to help me decide what to prioritize. If the app gets a lot of love, I’m planning to bring it to Android too. It’s built with Flutter, so it’s basically already ready!
