Inspiration

Inspired by the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically Goal 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities, and Goal 16: Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions, we embarked on a journey to celebrate and preserve the rich cultural heritage of the Tsonga people through technology. ModernTsonga aims to bridge the gap between tradition and modernity, ensuring that the vibrant arts, music, and traditions of the Tsonga people are not only preserved but also celebrated on a global stage.

What it does

ModernTsonga is an interactive digital platform that showcases the rich cultural heritage of the Tsonga people. It features:

• Multimedia Content: High-quality images, videos, and audio clips of Tsonga artifacts, dances, and music.
• Cultural Stories: Engaging narratives and articles that provide context and history.
• Interactive Features: Tools for users to explore and learn about Tsonga culture in an immersive way.
• Community Engagement: Forums and events that allow users to connect and share their experiences.

How we built it

1. Research and Planning:

   • Conducted extensive research on Tsonga culture, including interviews with cultural experts and community members.
   • Planned the website structure, user interface, and key features, ensuring alignment with SDGs.

2. Design:

   • Created prototypes using Figma, focusing on user engagement and accessibility.
   • Designed visual elements that reflect the essence of Tsonga culture while incorporating modern aesthetics.

3. Development:

   • Built the frontend using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, ensuring a responsive and interactive user experience.
   • Integrated APIs for interactive language features.

4. Content Creation:

   • Sourced high-quality images, videos, and audio clips of Tsonga lifestyle, dances, and music.
   • Created compelling text content to provide context and enrich the user experience.

5. Testing and Refinement:

   • Conducted user testing to gather feedback and improve usability.
   • Iteratively refined the design and functionality based on user input.

Challenges we ran into

• Cultural Sensitivity: Ensuring accurate and respectful representation of Tsonga culture was paramount. We collaborated with cultural experts to validate our content and approach.
• Design Consistency: Balancing modern design elements with traditional Tsonga aesthetics required multiple iterations to achieve a harmonious blend.
