Inspiration
As much as I love tech and technological innovations, I have a strong penchant for social justice and civil service, and this challenge seemed to combine the three.
What it does
In the end, this project will help generate a stronger ability to gauge and predict where efforts to protect against homelessness need to be centered. Efforts can include short-term acts such as providing temporary housing, or long-term acts such as lobbying for the repeal of single-family-zoning laws.
How I built it
Lots of consulting Google and more knowledgeable people
Challenges I ran into
I have a very minimal to non-existent background in any sort of software development. I was supposed to be the team lead and presenter for my much more tecnically-skilled team, but no one else got accepted, so figuring out how to do anything beyond basic Java code was already a challenge. Additionally, my laptop broke about twenty minutes into the official start of the Hack-a-Thon and I couldn't acquire a new one til about mid-day Saturday.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
Actually submitting a presentation, as minimal as it may be, and not giving up. I considered just packing it up and calling it quits when my laptop broke, but I decided to stick it out.
What I learned
Lots about web scraping, some about application design, deep learning using Keras
What's next for Modern Solutions for Modern Problems
Play with developing an actual algorithm/neural net!
