Inspiration
Last year, my mother had a heart attack at home. She tried calling for help, but the call didn’t go through. A neighbor happened to rush in and saved her life. That moment made me realize how unreliable and fragile our emergency communication systems are. I wanted to build something simple so no one else would have to depend on luck in an emergency.
What it does
Modern Community Emergency Chat is a chat-style app for emergencies. With one tap, you can alert your family, neighbors, and local responders. The app automatically creates hyperlocal groups and connects you with the closest help. An AI assistant gives step-by-step guidance — like CPR or first-aid — while responders are on their way.
How we built it
We started with a simple chatbot that asks questions like “What happened?” and “Where are you?”. We added a one-click SOS button that shares your location with trusted contacts. Then we connected it to a lightweight AI model that provides quick, reliable emergency instructions.
Challenges we ran into
Designing an interface simple enough to use under stress.
Making sure alerts only go to the right people, not everyone.
Training AI to give safe, clear advice in multiple languages.
Balancing data privacy with the need to share info in a crisis.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Built a working chatbot prototype and one-click SOS system.
Integrated the first version of our AI helper for triage support.
Tested it with users, who found it simple and natural to use.
Proved that communities can be connected faster in emergencies.
What we learned
Emergencies demand simplicity — the best tool is one you can use instantly. People trust apps that feel familiar, like a chat interface. And the biggest lesson: technology becomes most powerful when it connects people to each other, not just to institution
