Inspiration

I played some Papers, Please lately and while I was working on another game for the Hackathon with that same aesthetic first, it came to my mind, why not be inspired by Papers, Please and map it to Reddit. It just blends perfectly. And I wanted to make a game with this retro OS aesthetic for a long time.

What it does

Moderator, Please is a daily puzzle simulation game. You are a new Reddit Moderator and start your first shift on your beloved ModDesk 98 Operating System. When you "StartWork.exe", you will be prompted with User Posts, which then you have to either Approve, Remove, Warn oder Ban the User. Based on the rules in the Rulebook and the additional user info and past reportings you can view. But remember, you only have limited time per shift and only 3 strikes, so don't take the job lightly.

Also, there are some easter eggs and fun little mini apps and games. Can you catch them all?

The games works best in the Desktop View. But I tried to also create a mobile view that captures this oldschool feeling, mixed with modern day mobile UI/UX. Feel immersed was the number one priority.

How we built it

With lots of iteration on Game Design and Play Testing. Also Coffee and Cursor. Tech Stack is React 19, Tailwind CSS, Typescript and some super cool Sprites I found/bought on itch.io.

Challenges we ran into

I tend to overscope my game projects. Also Play Testing and Game Design is hard. But it was a nice challenge especially in connection with the Devvit environment.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Bringing a Game Dev project to a v1.0!!

What we learned

Play Testing is super important when building games. It's better to test with other people. Sadly I had no time to bring other people as testers on board, and I hope I catched all the major bugs :)

What's next for Moderator, Please

More game content of course, for the main game loop. And I have a few more ideas for cool mini games and easter eggs, I cannot wait to implement. + make everything more juicy!
