Inspiration

Job interviews are nerve-wracking. Many students and young professionals struggle not because they lack skills, but because they can’t clearly tell their stories under pressure. We wanted to build a tool that feels like a supportive coach in your pocket, something that helps you practice storytelling, boost confidence, and actually enjoy preparing for interviews.

What it does Mockstars is your pocket coach for mastering interview storytelling. The app guides users through behavioral interview prep with:

• STAR-based practice questions
• Personalized feedback and coaching
• Resume-aware story generation
• Progress tracking with gamified milestones
• On-the-go mobile sessions that fit into a busy student or early-career lifestyle Instead of just memorizing answers, users learn to craft compelling stories that stick.

How we built it We built Mockstars using:

• React Native + Expo for a polished cross-platform app experience
• Supabase for user data, resume parsing, and progress tracking
• AI models fine-tuned for storytelling, feedback, and role-specific drills
• RevenueCat for monetization and flexible paywall experiments
• Amplitude for analytics and user behavior insights Everything is designed to feel quick, interactive, and gamified—like Duolingo, but for interviews.

Challenges we ran into

• Handling resume uploads securely while keeping onboarding friction low
• Building a fluid UI that makes practicing feel fun instead of stressful
• Creating trust in AI-generated coaching when interviews are high-stakes

Accomplishments that we're proud of

• Built a mobile-first experience that works offline and on-the-go
• Designed a gamified progression system that motivates practice
• Integrated resume parsing + AI story generation in a way that feels seamless Early testers reported feeling significantly more confident after just one week of practice

What we learned

• Students and career switchers crave confidence, not just content
• Feedback needs to feel personal and empathetic, not generic
• Gamification and progress tracking are critical for retention
