Inspiration
The main inspiration for this idea came to us when we realized that the school clubs did not have any online presence, and thus did not have a way to grow and become more popular amongst high schoolers, except through boring school meetings that only happen twice a month. We also noticed that high school students will love anything in a social media format, thus we combined these ideas together and made a social media website for school clubs. Introducing Connectify, a social media website for high school students.
The website is modeled after a club in high school known as "Business Professionals of America", otherwise known as BPA. The social media users in this case would be the members of BPA, otherwise known as Business Professional Associates.
What it does
Connectify is a platform designed to allow high school students to share videos and pictures of their school clubs. It serves as a hub for students to showcase their club activities, achievements, and events, and provides a platform for students to connect with others who share similar interests. The goal of the website is to popularize school clubs and encourage more students to get involved in extracurricular activities.
How we built it
We developed the website using Django, a high-level Python web framework that provided us with efficient tools to create a robust and scalable platform. After completing the development phase, we hosted the website on Heroku, a cloud-based platform that allowed us to deploy, manage, and scale the website with ease. By using these technologies, we were able to create a highly functional and reliable platform that met the needs of our target audience. We used several APIs throughout the website, such as Cloudinary, an image/video handling API, to manage content. In addition, we utilized a Chatbot API as well to aid any new users.
Challenges we ran into
One of the main challenges we faced was ensuring that the website was both user-friendly and visually appealing. We spent a significant amount of time designing and iterating the website's user interface to ensure that it was intuitive and easy to use. Additionally, we had to ensure that the website was scalable and could handle a large number of users and content uploads. Making sure that the content which users uploaded on the website was easy to view was especially a challenge since users could upload any image/video with varying resolutions/sizes, thus it took lots of testing to figure out the best ways to handle the content effectively.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
I am proud of several accomplishments, including the successful launch of the website, the positive feedback we received from early users, and the relatively high engagement levels among students who are already starting to use the platform. We are also proud of the fact that we were able to build a platform that promotes school spirit and encourages students to get involved in extracurricular activities. Finally, the project was completed in an extremely short time span and thus it is quite impressive considering how polished it is in such a limited time frame.
What we learned
Through the process of building Connectify, we learned a lot about the importance of user-centered design and the value of iterative development. We also gained a deeper understanding of web development technologies and how to leverage them to build scalable and reliable platforms. In addition, we learned a lot about how to structure databases correctly and manage mistakes early on, because they can add up to insurmountable issues later on if they are not addressed in the earlier stages of production.
What's Next for Connectify
Moving forward, we plan to continue to improve and enhance the website's features and functionality, incorporating feedback from users to ensure that the platform remains relevant and valuable. We also plan to explore opportunities to integrate the website with other school communication channels, such as newsletters and announcements, to increase its reach and impact. Finally, we hope to expand the website to other schools and communities, creating a network of student-led clubs and activities that can inspire and motivate students around the world. This would be the most fulfilling goal as we would be breaking grounds into a new field that combines two seemingly unrelated aspects of school and social media, into one platform.
