About the Project: Mock-Mate is an AI-powered mock interview platform built to help competitive exam aspirants and job seekers prepare effectively through realistic, personalized interview simulations. It supports exams like GATE, UPSC, NEET, JEE, APSC, and even company-specific roles like SDE at Google or Microsoft—all through a smart, interview-style video interface.
In addition to interview preparation, Mock-Mate also serves as an AI-driven learning assistant, capable of teaching users any topic they choose—be it academic concepts, technical skills, or soft skills. This transforms the platform into a holistic educational tool that supports both learning and practice, accessible anytime, anywhere.
What Inspired Us: We noticed that while aspirants spend months preparing for written exams, interview preparation is often ignored or underdeveloped. Many lack access to real-time practice, structured feedback, or mentorship. This gap between preparation and performance inspired us to build a realistic, AI-driven solution that feels as serious as the real thing—but is accessible anytime, anywhere.
How We Built It: We used a combination of:
- GPT-based AI models for dynamic question generation, response evaluation, and topic-wise teaching
- WebRTC and Agora SDK for the real-time, video-call-like interview interface
- React Native and Node.js for the cross-platform frontend and backend
- Firebase & MongoDB for secure user authentication and data handling
Our system also includes a searchable repository of previous year questions for various exams, a real-time feedback system offering detailed analytics after each session, and now an AI teacher mode to help users master specific topics interactively.
What We Learned:
- Designing a user-friendly yet professional interface is crucial to simulate the real interview environment.
- Customizing AI behavior for different exams, roles, and learning preferences improved user engagement.
- Scalable backend architecture and data privacy became key considerations early in development.
- User feedback helped us prioritize features like timed mode, past Q&A access, multi-language support, and now AI-based teaching assistance.
Challenges We Faced:
- Balancing AI accuracy with diverse interview expectations across different exams and job roles.
- Creating a video interface that feels both familiar and optimized for interviews.
- Ensuring low-latency performance on mobile and in low-bandwidth areas.
- Managing diverse datasets for both question generation and topic-wise teaching without overwhelming users.
Outcome: Mock-Mate has grown into a complete interview and learning preparation ecosystem—offering realism, flexibility, and accessibility. From solo aspirants to institutions, it’s designed to scale with the user’s needs and goals, empowering them to not only practice interviews but also learn the topics they need help with, all in one place.
