Inspiration
Postpartum depression can be isolating—not just for new mothers, but for their partners as well. Many couples struggle to communicate their feelings during this period, and professional support isn’t always immediately accessible. Mochi-chatkit was inspired by the need for a gentle, non-judgmental space where both partners can feel heard, supported, and better equipped to understand each other during a vulnerable time.
What it does
Mochi-chatkit is an AI-powered chatbot designed to support couples dealing with postpartum depression. It provides empathetic conversation, emotional check-ins, and guided prompts tailored to each partner’s perspective. The chatbot helps users reflect on their feelings, encourages healthy communication between partners, and offers evidence-based coping strategies and educational insights. Mochi-chatkit is intended as a supportive companion, not a replacement for professional care.
How I built it
I built Mochi-chatkit using an AI conversational model with carefully designed prompts focused on empathy, validation, and clarity. The system differentiates between individual and shared interactions, allowing each partner to engage privately or explore communication prompts together. Safety-focused guardrails and disclaimers were integrated to ensure responsible use, and the interface was designed to feel calm, approachable, and emotionally safe.
Challenges I ran into
The biggest challenge was designing an AI experience for a sensitive mental-health context. It was critical to avoid giving medical advice while still providing meaningful support. Balancing empathy with safety, preventing harmful responses, and ensuring inclusive language for different family dynamics required careful iteration. Another challenge was structuring the chatbot so it supports both individuals without unintentionally taking sides.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
I’m proud of creating a tool that approaches postpartum depression with compassion and responsibility. Mochi-chatkit demonstrates how AI can be used to support emotional well-being while respecting boundaries. I’m especially proud of designing flows that acknowledge both partners’ experiences and encourage healthier, more empathetic communication.
What I learned
This project taught me the importance of ethical AI design, especially in mental-health applications. I learned how prompt design, tone, and phrasing directly impact emotional safety. I also gained a deeper appreciation for designing technology that supports relationships, not just individual users.
What’s next for Mochi-chatkit
Next, I want to collaborate with mental-health professionals to further validate the chatbot’s tone and guidance. Future plans include multilingual support, customizable check-ins, and stronger crisis-escalation pathways that help users connect with real-world resources when needed. Long term, I hope Mochi-chatkit can become a trusted companion that complements professional postpartum care and strengthens partner understanding during one of life’s most challenging transitions.
