Inspiration

This project is dedicated to M. M is a woman for whom Liz did freelance work for a few months, and she is a user of mobility aids. M and Liz frequently had discussions about the time-consuming, frustrating nature of navigating the world via a motorized wheelchair. ADA accessibility is required in all buildings, but that doesn't mean that all trips are efficient or safe. We created Mobilify as a platform for disabled people to map their journeys and connect with others who understand them.

What it does

The app has two components:

  1. A map feature that utilizes Google Maps to find a route from A to B that is accessible for the user's needs.
  2. A community feature, including a forum, event meetup pins on the map, and user ratings of the accessibility level of a location.

How we built it

We used two platforms: Figma for a wireframe, and Vue.js for the actual web app.

Challenges we ran into

Our initial idea was to utilize the Google Maps API library to implement our route mapping idea. However, Google Maps doesn't offer endpoints or data on the information we need. To remedy this, we brainstormed a user-reporting system for gathering information about travel time, maintenance issues, etc.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Our team collaboration
  • Our creativity and willingness to add new ideas
  • Having both a wireframe and a functioning app

What we learned

Our team was able to gain more experience with Figma, Vue, and APIs.

What's next for Mobilify

UW Facilities has a map with information about assisted entrances, elevators, wheelchair-navigable routes, etc. The ultimate goal for Mobilify is to translate this information into an interactive interface and also extend our data beyond just the UW campus.
