Mngazi: Inspiration We were inspired by the millions of people in emerging markets who lack access to affordable financial services. Remittance corridors bleed 5-7% in fees, and Bitcoin hodlers in volatile markets face impossible choices: sell their assets during crashes or go without liquidity during emergencies. We envisioned a system that respects local currencies, works without internet, and lets people build wealth without abandoning it.

What it does Mngazi is a multichain, offline-first financial inclusion platform that bridges Bitcoin and local currencies through Lightning Network integration, enabling instant, low-cost transactions for underbanked populations even in low-connectivity environments. We solve the remittance and cross-border transfer problem by combining Bitcoin's speed and borderlessness with seamless local currency on/off ramps through trusted payment providers. Users can deposit local currency to receive Bitcoin on Lightning, receive money from anywhere in the world instantly, or cash out holdings back to fiat, creating a frictionless bridge between traditional finance and Bitcoin-powered payments—all with 95% lower fees than traditional remittances and transaction speeds under 3 seconds.

Beyond simple payments, Mngazi empowers wealth building through multiple pathways: staking rewards for Bitcoin holders and collateralized Bitcoin loans that allow users to access liquidity without selling their Bitcoin holdings. Users can borrow against their Bitcoin at competitive rates, preserving their long-term asset growth while meeting immediate financial needs. This keeps wealth locked in the ecosystem and prevents panic selling during market volatility.

How we built it We architected Mngazi using Lightning Network protocols for instant settlements, integrated REST APIs with local currency providers for fiat conversion, and built an ussd client to sort out the

Challenges we ran into

Accomplishments that we're proud of We successfully built a production-ready Lightning integration with sub-3-second transaction times. Our offline-first architecture works seamlessly across 2G networks and enables transactions even in areas with intermittent connectivity.

What we learned We discovered that users prioritize reliability and simplicity over feature richness

What's next for Mngazi Our immediate priority is deep integration with local payment service providers (PSPs) across Africa, enabling users to access Bitcoin loans directly through their existing PSP accounts and local banking channels.
