Inspiration

Our inspiration for Skillabs comes from the significant digital skills gap faced by small businesses, especially in underserved communities. Recognizing that many business owners struggle to access relevant training resources due to time constraints, a lack of knowledge, or limited access to formal education, we envisioned a platform that not only provides tailored training but also empowers users to navigate the digital landscape with confidence. The goal is to help small businesses thrive by equipping them with the essential skills needed to compete effectively in today’s market.

What it does

Skillabs is an AI-powered platform that delivers personalized digital skills training through interactive video lessons, presentations, and a questioning platform within a simulation environment. Users provide descriptions of their businesses and their desired skills, and the platform generates a customized learning path that adapts as they progress. The training is tailored to meet the specific needs of various industries, including e-commerce, healthcare, and retail, enabling users to gain practical, actionable skills that can be applied immediately in their operations.

How We Built It

Prospective built Skillabs using a combination of advanced technologies:

1.Next JS 13 utilized for its powerful App Router, allowing for a seamless user experience and efficient content delivery. 2.Stripe integrated to manage secure payment processing, enabling users to access premium content easily. 3.Shadcn and Tailwind CSS for an attractive and user-friendly interface, ensuring accessibility and ease of navigation. 4.OpenAI's API powering the AI-driven personalized content, adapting training modules based on user inputs and progress. 5.ORMs facilitating efficient database interactions, allowing for quick retrieval of user data and training history. 6.The platform is hosted on DigitalOcean, providing reliable and scalable infrastructure for users, particularly in areas with limited connectivity. 7.The platform is secured with a custom domain and SSL certificate, ensuring user data safety, and implemented a CI/CD pipeline via GitHub Actions for smooth updates and maintenance. NB The currently available prototype is demonstrated through Canva wireframing

Challenges we ran into

1.Integrating AI Capabilities: Ensuring that the AI can accurately tailor content to a diverse range of business types and skill levels required extensive training and fine-tuning of the model. 2.User Engagement: Creating an engaging and intuitive user experience that can cater to individuals with varying levels of digital literacy posed a design challenge. 3.Accessibility Issues: Finding effective ways to deliver content in areas with limited internet access is a concern, leading to the develop mobile-first solutions and offline content options.

Accomplishments That We're Proud Of

We take pride in several key accomplishments: 1.Successfully developing an AI-driven platform that delivers personalized, practical training for small business owners. 2.Achieving a user-friendly design that ensures accessibility for individuals with varying levels of technical expertise. 3.Establishing a robust infrastructure capable of scaling to meet user demands, particularly for underserved communities.

What we learned

This project has taught us the importance of user-centered design and the need for continuous feedback from potential users. We learned how vital it is to understand the specific challenges faced by small businesses in underserved communities and to adapt our approach based on their input. Additionally, we gained valuable experience in integrating AI solutions and ensuring that technology serves as a true enabler rather than a barrier.

What's next for Skillabs

Moving forward, we plan to: 1.Expand our training offerings to include more specialized content based on user feedback and industry trends. 2.Develop partnerships with local organizations and educational institutions to enhance outreach and provide resources for businesses in underserved areas. 3.Continuously refine our AI algorithms to improve personalization and effectiveness, ensuring that Skillabs remains a valuable resource for small business owners looking to enhance their digital skills.
