Inspiration

The inspiration for Miz Readz-a-Lot came from two worlds that don’t usually meet: career coaching and drag culture. On one hand, career development tools are often dry, intimidating, or designed in a way that doesn’t connect emotionally with younger professionals, students, or people navigating uncertain paths. On the other hand, drag culture is bold, unapologetic, witty, and empowering it thrives on authenticity and self-expression.

So I asked myself: What if career guidance could feel less like a lecture and more like a fabulous glow-up session? A place where people feel seen, celebrated, and motivated, while also getting real, actionable advice.

That spark gave birth to Miz Readz-a-Lot; an AI-powered drag queen career coach who “reads” your career path with sass, humor, and tough love. She’s not just a chatbot; she’s a personality, a mentor, and a performer rolled into one, and by blending performance art energy with practical career advice, Miz makes self-reflection and planning something people want to do because it feels fun, affirming, and unforgettable.

What it does

Miz Readz-a-Lot transforms boring career guidance into a glow-up experience. Users get personalized advice, fun quizzes, progress tracking, and “Glow-Up Reports” all delivered with fabulous drag queen energy. It makes self-reflection playful and engaging, so users walk away both entertained and empowered.

How I built it

I built the prototype using React, TypeScript, and TailwindCSS for the frontend, hosted on Netlify. The dynamic AI features are powered by OpenAI’s GPT-4 API, wrapped with custom prompts to create Miz’s unique personality. I used Bolt.new as the build environment to rapidly prototype and iterate.

Challenges I ran into

The biggest challenge was balancing humor and sass with real, practical career advice. I had to fine-tune prompts so the AI was fun but also genuinely useful. Another challenge was building an engaging UI that reflects the vibrancy of drag culture without overwhelming the user experience.

Accomplishments that I’m proud of

  1. Built a working MVP from scratch with Vite + React + Tailwind, hosted on Netlify, in just a short timeframe.
  2. Shaped a unique concept that blends drag culture with AI career coaching — something fresh and socially impactful.
  3. Integrated AI successfully to move from static Q&A into dynamic, personalized advice powered by OpenAI.
  4. Designed an engaging UX that breaks the mold of boring career tools, making guidance feel playful and uplifting.
  5. Early positive feedback from test users who loved the humor and relatability while still gaining real insights.
  6. Created a roadmap for exciting features like Glow-Up Reports, progress tracking, and AI memory for richer conversations.

What I learned

I learned how powerful personality-driven AI experiences can be when combined with thoughtful design. I also deepened my skills in React, conversational AI integration, and creative UX storytelling.

What's next for Miz Readz A Lot

  1. Add conversation memory for more personalized coaching
  2. Expand Glow-Up Reports into shareable, visual summaries
  3. Build a leaderboard and streaks system to keep users motivated
  4. Launch as a web app that could scale to mobile
