Inspiration

As someone who tries to understand complex math formulas in simple, everyday language, I found no app on the market that allows for natural, intuitive calculations—something like a notepad that magically understands math and performs calculations as I type. AI Napkin Math bridges this gap, letting you jot down calculations naturally while our AI identifies variables and math expressions, ensuring accurate and timely computations.

What it does

AI Napkin Math allows users to write down calculations in plain, natural language. Using the advanced Mistral model, the app identifies and interprets variables and mathematical expressions seamlessly. This enables users to perform complex calculations effortlessly, ensuring accurate results in real-time. It's like having a smart notepad that understands and computes math as you type.

How we built it

We use the Mistral model to detect whether a text is a variable or a math expression that needs to be recalculated with updated variables. Our web app is built using Next.js and React.

Challenges we ran into

Getting the UI/UX right is a challenge, and we don't think we're quite there yet. We have done a lot of trial and error with prompting.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

It's a new and unexplored idea, and we didn't have a clear direction at first. We explored a couple of different approaches and finally arrived at a solution that we are proud of. Oh, and we finished it in 24 hours.
