We hear about the many environmental problems around us but how many of us truly try to make a change? What if we told you that we found a solution at the cost of just a couple of clicks?

Inspiration

We thought about what would be useful to help individuals reduce their environmental impact. The simplest and most straight forward way would be by reducing our waste or at least disposing of it correctly! Many of us know someone(including ourselves) that are too lazy and confused to distinguish between what items should go into which bin.

What it does

This mobile app will allow users to search for items they want to dispose of, and categorise it. It will let users know whether to dispose the searched item into blue, black or green bin.

How we built it

We use Android Studio to develop an android app using Java.

Challenges we ran into

We faced setbacks while searching for a way to use machine learning to perform searching task that must be “taught” to the algorithm and therefore quickly recognise patterns and perform the task in a way that outpaces human ability.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We were able to accomplish and learn new knowledge by working as a team such.

What we learned

We have learned group discussion can help in problem solving and have learned new skills to further improve our project.

What's next for Save The Planet

We plan to add new features such as using artificial intelligence program to pick out and identify objects from users' camera images to make it more user friendly. We will be adding more detailed descriptions about the items searched and a reminder for the users to take out the bin.
