Inspiration

We were inspired to create this project because, like many students aspiring to study in the USA, we found it challenging to find a comprehensive resource for all necessary financial information. The lack of a centralized platform for scholarships, financial aid, and college costs made it clear that a resourceful website could significantly help students navigate these complexities. Our goal was to bridge this gap and provide a valuable tool for students facing similar challenges.

What it does

The website offers students a range of tools and information to make informed decisions about financing their education. It provides detailed explanations and opportunities for merit-based scholarships, federal student aid, and includes a net cost estimator to help students plan for higher education expenses. By simplifying the complex process of funding education, the platform supports students in finding and securing the necessary financial resources, making the journey smoother and more manageable.

How we built it

We built the website using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. The navigation bar is enhanced with JavaScript for smaller devices, and we used Google Fonts to improve visual appeal. We used GitHub Pages to host our website temporarily and employed website readability checkers to ensure the content was easy to read. Key aspects of the project included researching scholarships and financial aid, designing a responsive navigation bar and toolbar, organizing the researched content logically, and focusing on a simple, user-friendly interface.

Challenges we ran into

One of the biggest challenges was ensuring device compatibility. The navigation bar didn't work as intended on smaller devices. This worried our team as none of us had proper web development experience. Debugging and adjusting our code to achieve a consistent appearance and functionality on both desktop and mobile platforms was demanding. Additionally, as we had limited web development experience, we needed to quickly learn and adapt to various technologies. We overcame these challenges by thorough testing, iterative improvements, and leveraging online resources and tutorials to enhance our skills.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of creating a comprehensive and user-friendly platform that significantly aids students in their educational journey. Successfully implementing a responsive navigation bar and ensuring device compatibility were major achievements. Positive feedback from initial users affirmed the value of our work. Our effective collaboration as a team and our ability to quickly learn new skills were also key accomplishments.

What we learned

Throughout this project, we gained valuable insights into teamwork, technical skills, and problem-solving. We developed our web development capabilities, including navigation bar and toolbar implementation, external fonts integration, and ensuring device compatibility. A particularly memorable learning moment was discovering the MDN docs for HTML and CSS, which made learning and implementing web standards much easier. This resource was instrumental in helping us understand and apply best practices effectively.

What's next for Code4Good

We plan to implement additional features, such as journaling, an activities tracker, an awards tracker, a resume maker, and counseling resources. These additions will provide students with a more comprehensive set of tools to support their educational and personal development. We also aim to gather user feedback through surveys and usability tests to continually improve the platform and better address students' needs.
