🚀 Inspiration We were inspired by the urgent need to make climate education fun, accessible, and data-driven for kids. Seeing the power of storytelling and the wonders of space, we imagined a way to blend NASA's real-time Earth data with an engaging animated adventure for young learners. Kids love space explorers — so why not turn them into EarthGuardians?
🌍 What it does "Mission: EarthGuardians" is an interactive 3D story-game where kids (ages 6–12) join a team of animated Space Scouts to explore Earth’s biggest environmental challenges. Each mission is a chapter that combines:
🛰️ NASA satellite data (fires, ice loss, ocean pollution)
🎮 Mini-games and data-driven simulations
🗣️ Voice-guided narration for non-readers
🌐 Interactive 3D globe with live event overlays
Kids learn climate science, space tech, and conservation while becoming heroes of our home planet.
🛠️ How we built it 3D Animation: Created using Blender and Unity with cartoon-style models and environments.
Real-Time Data: Integrated APIs from NASA GIBS, EONET, Aqua/Terra satellites, and APOD.
Story Engine: Built a chapter-based system with branching storylines based on user interactions.
Voice AI: Used text-to-speech models to create an optional AI narrator ("ScoutBot").
Mini-Games: Developed with Unity’s 2D/3D engine and animated assets.
AR App: Companion AR features built using WebAR and Unity to display 3D planets in real space.
🧩 Challenges we ran into Data Simplification: Making NASA satellite data understandable and engaging for young children without losing scientific accuracy.
Voice Interaction: Training a child-friendly AI that explains complex science terms simply.
Performance Optimization: Balancing beautiful 3D graphics with performance on low-end school tablets.
Offline Mode: Ensuring teachers could run missions in classrooms with limited internet access.
🏆 Accomplishments that we're proud of Designed a fully animated and narrated learning game that combines real-world data and imaginative storytelling.
Created the Graph-to-Animation Engine that turns dry data into playful scenes (e.g., sea level graphs into flooded streets).
Successfully tested the offline classroom mode with a group of students — and they loved it!
Integrated 4 different NASA data sources into an accessible, engaging user experience for kids.
📚 What we learned Kids learn best when they feel like part of a story — data becomes powerful when wrapped in a mission.
Voice narration and animated visuals greatly enhance accessibility for non-readers or younger users.
Earth science can be fun, visual, and interactive when we move beyond textbooks and charts.
🌌 *What's next for Mission: EarthGuardians – Space Scouts Save the Planet! * More Chapters: Add missions on coral bleaching, air pollution, and space junk clean-up.
Language Support: Include multilingual voice narrators (Bangla, Spanish, Swahili, etc.).
Global Leaderboard: Kids can earn badges and see how their choices improve Earth.
Teacher Portal: Let educators assign missions aligned to science curriculums.
Collaborate with NASA Classrooms: Launch pilot programs in schools globally.
VR Expansion: Allow kids to enter the Space Scouts ship or explore Earth in immersive VR mode.
