Inspiration

I love chocolate mint so much — but the moment you eat a mint treat, it's gone. I wanted a cozy place to catch that fleeting moment and keep it, like pressing a flower into a specimen book.

What it does

  • Record any chocolate-mint treat with a photo, and rate three feelings on a five-leaf scale: mint-ness, excitement, and "want it again".
  • Each record becomes a "specimen" card in your collection.
  • As you record, your own Mint Island grows and levels up, with little mint dwellers appearing.
  • 100% free to the end. No ads. No account or sign-up. All data stays on your device.
  • Optional: "buy the creator a mint" — a small ¥300 tip. Each tip welcomes a special crowned mint dweller to your island as a keepsake of your support (up to three). All core features stay free.

How I built it

The app is a vanilla web app — plain JavaScript, HTML and CSS, with IndexedDB/localStorage so everything stays on-device and offline. I wrapped it as a native iOS app with Capacitor, and the optional tip is a consumable in-app purchase powered by RevenueCat. I built it solo, as a non-engineer, with Claude Code.

Challenges I ran into

I'm not an engineer, so shipping a real iOS app was completely new territory. App Review taught me a lot — removing price words from screenshots (Guideline 2.3.7), adding a camera-usage description to fix a crash, and setting App Availability before release. Native-vs-browser differences (the "tell a friend" link and on-device backup) also needed native handling inside the Capacitor WebView.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

I actually shipped my own app to the App Store — live worldwide in 175 countries — as a solo non-coder, and it keeps its promise: free to the end, no ads, no sign-up.

What I learned

The whole journey from a web app → Capacitor → App Store → live, including how to stay calm and recover from review rejections.

What's next

Keep growing the island — more kinds of specimens, small seasonal touches, and new mint dwellers to meet.
