Inspiration
As students in the Bay Area, we know firsthand the pressure people can experience during work and school. Recognizing that burnout often occurs while being at screens, we drew inspiration from windows mascots seen on social media and created our own to promote mental health in an accessible manner.
What it does
John Mintal (Mint Condition’s mascot) provides a friendly presence that assists users based on their needs. The app becomes the one reaching out to students, encouraging them to take breaks and giving personalized suggestions based on data collected. Burnout is calculated and accounted for in John’s behavior, while the data being collected is simultaneously compiled into adjustable graphs to allow users to track their progress visually.
How we built it
Electron was used to build a cross-platform desktop app with features like screen-time tracking and notifications. The development was done in Visual Studio Code, and Microsoft Copilot helped us code, debug, and prototype features faster.
Challenges we ran into
We initially had trouble determining how to connect what the user inputs to the questionnaire to the statistics page. In addition, we ran into some issues in determining how the app could determine the screen time of apps.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of the graphic design because our mascot, John Mintal, is able to provide emotional support through a safe and relaxed environment, allowing users to better connect with the application. In addition, we
What we learned
We gained greater experience in the process of creating a Windows app, as well as experience in the tools that we could use. Additionally, we learned how window companions uniquely work, compared to conventional apps.
What's next for Mint Condition
We wish to implement and refine more features that can allow users to have a better experience! John Mintal will one day unleash their full potential. This includes a full schedule component, which will allow users to create a schedule based on their answers in the questionnaire. More accessories will be available as well!
