Inspiration
Our inspiration came from two worlds:
Hypercasual games which are designed to be instantly accessible and easy to learn, emphasizing intuitive gameplay mechanics and minimal instructions. Striking and simple visuals, with a focus on bold colors, clean designs, and minimal clutter. This visual style helps to grab attention and create a positive first impression.
Themed entertainment, also known as themed experiences, involves creating artificial, narrative-based environments to immerse visitors in a specific story or world. This encompasses various forms, from theme parks and museums to restaurants and retail spaces, all designed to evoke a particular atmosphere and storyline.
We imagined these experiences colliding through Spectacles: short-form, themed, social games playable in real-world environments.
What it does
Minigolf Mayhem offers an intuitive social gaming experience for public spaces incorporating branded and themed mini golf course designs with different editions based on live event locations, character IP, conference themes, sponsor products, holidays, sporting teams...etc.
How we built it
Using Lens Studio Spectacles Interaction Toolkit we created a complete 3-hole minigolf game prototype based on famous Los Angeles attractions the location of AWE 2025
Key features include:
- Realistic physics for ball movement
- Gesture-based input
- Custom UI that follows the player’s view
- Scoring
Challenges we ran into
- Not enough time to fully explore, develop and implement all of our ideas.
- Hardware limitations: 45-minute battery life and 25MB file size cap for Spectacles constrained asset complexity.
- Course physics: Adding accurate collision boundaries for each custom-designed course was time-consuming.
- UI design: Creating billboarding UI that orients smoothly with player movement in 3D space took extensive testing.
- Customizability: Our edit/create mode for custom holes wasn’t completed due to time constraints, but the foundation is there.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Delivered a functional, playable prototype that runs fully on Spectacles.
- Designed and implemented 3 themed AR holes inspired of local LA points of interests.
- Demostrate potential of social, co-located AR gaming for live events and public spaces.
- Proved viability of hypercasual, themed AR games on wearable hardware.
What we learned
- How to develop, QA and publish complete game loop inside Lens Studio for Spectacles
- How to adapt rapid prototyping workflows for real-time 3D experiences with hardware constraints
What's next for Minigolf Mayhem
Complete the intended shared gaming experience with the following components:
- Expand to a full 9-hole LA Edition
- Add course editor & customization tools
- Enable multi-player mode with co-located session sync
- Design themed editions for festivals, sports events, and brand activations
- Launch pilot tests in public venues and event spaces
