Our journey with "MiniCarpool" began with a dual inspiration: our passion for sustainable transportation solutions and the charm of "Mini Metro," a game that simplifies complex city transit systems into engaging puzzles. As creators of real-life carpooling solutions aimed at reducing carbon emissions, we saw an opportunity to translate our work into a gamified format. This wasn't just about building another game; it was about creating a platform that could inspire players to think critically about their daily transportation choices and the environmental impact of those choices.
We envisioned a game where the challenge wasn't just about navigating from point A to point B but doing so in a way that minimized CO2 emissions. The goal was to make sustainability not just a concept but a core part of gameplay, offering players a fun, interactive way to understand and engage with the principles of eco-friendly transportation. This blend of education and entertainment aimed to foster a deeper appreciation for the role each person plays in combating climate change through smarter, more sustainable choices.
"MiniCarpool" was conceived as a bridge between the digital and real world, where the lessons learned in-game could translate into more conscious, environmentally friendly decisions in players' lives. What It Does:
"MiniCarpool" is more than just a game; it's an interactive journey through the intricacies of urban carpooling, challenging players to create the most efficient routes while minimizing their carbon footprint. At its core, the game revolves around designing carpool paths in a variety of city landscapes, each with its unique traffic patterns, road closures, and environmental challenges. Players must navigate these obstacles by planning routes that not only save time and fuel but also reduce CO2 emissions, reflecting our real-world mission of promoting sustainable transportation solutions.
The game introduces a unique CO2 budget for each level, pushing players to make strategic decisions that balance speed, efficiency, and environmental impact. This mechanic serves as a direct link between the game's challenges and the real-world goal of reducing carbon emissions. By integrating Google Wallet API, we've also incorporated a system of rewards and achievements, including the option to upgrade to an electric car, which offers lower emissions and aids in navigating levels more efficiently. This feature not only adds a layer of strategy and progression but also underscores the importance of adopting greener technologies in combating climate change.
Through "MiniCarpool," players experience the complexities of managing a carpool system, from selecting the right vehicle to optimizing routes amidst dynamically changing urban landscapes. How We Built It:
Building "MiniCarpool" was an adventure in learning, adapting, and overcoming challenges. Our journey began with a clear vision: to create a game that simulates carpooling challenges while emphasizing sustainability. Inspired by the simplicity and depth of "Mini Metro," we wanted to craft an experience that combined strategic planning with real-world environmental impacts.
Languages and Frameworks:
- Dart and Flutter: We chose Dart for its flexibility and Flutter for its ability to deliver a seamless cross-platform experience. This powerful combo allowed us to develop a visually appealing and responsive game for both iOS and Android with a single codebase.
- Flame Engine: For the game mechanics and animations, we integrated the Flame engine with Flutter. Flame provided the tools we needed to create immersive 2D game environments and dynamic interactions.
APIs and Technologies:
- Google Wallet API: A key feature of our game is the rewards system, enabled by Google Wallet API. This integration allowed us to offer digital rewards, like upgrades to electric vehicles, directly within the game, enhancing player engagement and underscoring the theme of sustainability.
- Tiled Map Editor: To design our city maps, we used Tiled, a flexible editor that made it easy to create complex urban environments. These maps were then integrated into the game using the flame_tiled plugin, adding depth and realism to the gameplay.
Localization: Recognizing the global importance of sustainable transportation, we localized "MiniCarpool" for English and Japanese audiences. This process involved not just translating text but also adapting cultural references to resonate with players from different backgrounds.
Development Process: Our development process was iterative and agile. We started with a prototype to test the core mechanics, focusing on the CO2 budget system and route planning challenges. As the game evolved, we paid close attention to user feedback, refining the gameplay and UI/UX to ensure an engaging and intuitive experience. The integration of Google Wallet API posed some technical challenges, particularly in managing digital rewards and transactions securely and efficiently. However, through collaborative problem-solving and leveraging online resources, we were able to implement a seamless rewards system that added a meaningful layer to the game.

Enhanced Game Mechanics: Based on player feedback and our continuous learning, we intend to refine the game's mechanics to offer more complex challenges and realistic simulations.
