Inspiration

AP credit charts are public, but they’re scattered across catalogs, PDFs, and lookup tools and none of them answer the question students actually ask: "if I want this college and this major, which APs should I take?" We built Boggle so high schoolers don’t have to decode twenty different policies just to plan next year’s schedule.

What it does

Boggle helps students pick a top public university and an intended major, optionally set an expected AP score, and get a ranked AP plan. Each recommendation includes the published course equivalents, credit hours, and minimum score from that school’s official chart, plus a link back to the source.

How we built it

We designed the student flow in Figma, then built a web app on top of scraped AP equivalencies from top public universities. Per-school parsers normalize messy tables into one data model; a major-mapping layer ranks exams by relevance; and the UI surfaces only awards a student would actually earn at their expected score.

Challenges we ran into

Every school formats AP credit differently such as HTML tables, prose pages, PDFs, score ranges like “3+,” footnotes, and placeholder course codes. Bot-blocked pages and college-specific rules made live scraping unreliable, and we had to carefully separate real published awards from generic placeholders so recommendations stayed accurate.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We covered the US News top public universities in one tool, shipped a clean student-facing flow that matches our design, and made sure course codes and credits come from each school’s chart. Opening an exam shows the full score tiers a university actually publishes.

What we learned

Official AP policies are messier than any single spreadsheet. We learned how to normalize inconsistent credit data, prioritize major-aligned exams over elective credit, and design an interface that feels like guidance for a stressed high schooler.

What's next for Boggle

Map AP credit onto real major degree requirements, add richer compare-two-colleges views, improve coverage for PDF/JS-only schools, and explore personalized Q&A on top of a student’s plan.
