Inspiration
The idea came from the classic Minesweeper game — but we wanted to bring that same thrill and logic-based gameplay to Reddit. Our goal was to make something simple, social, and competitive, where users could challenge each other directly within Reddit posts. Instead of just playing alone, now users can create minefields and watch others try to survive them.
What it does
Mines is an interactive Reddit game where players uncover safe tiles on a grid while avoiding hidden mines.
One user creates a minefield and posts it.
Other Reddit users play the challenge directly in the post.
If they click on a mine — game over!
Uncover all safe cells to win.
It’s a fast, strategic game of luck and deduction — all playable natively on Reddit.
How we built it
We used Phaser (a 2D game framework) with Devvit, Reddit’s app platform, to bring the game to life.
The grid logic and mine generation were coded in Phaser.
Devvit handles Reddit integration and post interactivity.
We designed lightweight UI animations and visual feedback for clicks and game-over states. The entire game runs seamlessly inside a Reddit post, providing a native feel with zero external dependencies.
Challenges we ran into
Managing state and interactions inside Reddit posts without full page reloads.
Creating a responsive layout that looks good both on desktop and mobile Reddit views.
Ensuring smooth performance when uncovering multiple tiles at once.
Balancing simplicity while keeping gameplay engaging.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Built a fully interactive Reddit game using Devvit and Phaser.
Designed a clean and minimal interface that feels intuitive even on a small Reddit canvas.
Added custom animations and logic for uncovering cells and showing nearby mine counts.
Made the entire experience fun and social — perfect for sharing and competing on Reddit threads.
What we learned
How to integrate Phaser with Devvit for dynamic post interactions.
Handling state persistence and event logic within Reddit’s framework.
The importance of UI responsiveness in compact post areas.
How game design differs when your platform limits screen size and inputs — it forced us to think creatively.
What's next for Mines
Add leaderboards to track top players and creators.
Introduce difficulty modes and larger grids.
Allow players to create and share custom challenges easily.
Add multiplayer modes and community tournaments.
Polish animations, sounds, and overall UX for a smoother Reddit gaming experience.
