Inspiration
At UTEP, there was an incident where a few girls were being followed to their car and we wanted to facilitate access to any sort of assistance that a student may need at any time.
What it does
MinerLine is a chatbot that provides easy and quick access to campus resources such as police, car assistance, crisis line, and crime prevention. It also allows you to contact the police through text if you are not able to speak on the phone for any reason.
How I built it
We used Twilio Studio to build the entire bot.
Challenges I ran into
The first challenge was trying to figure out how we were going to build the bot. We knew what we wanted it to do but we didn't know what technologies could accomplish that. We also had to make it something that our whole team could understand since half of our team had no experience with computer science. The biggest challenge was trying to figure out how to use Twilio. We tried several tools within Twilio and we tried to follow multiple tutorials but most were outdated or not clear. We tried to use Autopilot, Studio and coding with python. At the end, we had the most success with Studio.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
As a team with diverse backgrounds and relatively little experience, I think our biggest accomplishment was creating something that addresses our problem.
What I learned
We learned that creating something that looks simple on the outside can actually be a complex process. We learned how to use Twilio at a beginner level and we became aware of a lot of tools that are out there that can be used to create pretty much anything.
What's next for MinerLine
Our plan is to get this to the university level, share our solution, and continue to improve it.
