Inspiration
The inspiration was taken from the PickHacks sweater design with the pixelated dinosaur on it. We are all participating in this event to gain experience and learn from those around us and to showcase our creativity and technical skills through game development. This project shows our desire to create something unique while collaborating and improving our abilities.
What it does
This game is a spin off Dino Run, but upgraded to use an MS&T themed setting. The Miner runs through college life, taking tests, overcoming challenges, and occasionally becoming overwhelmed by an obstacle. This represents the daily life of a student at MS&T. Some successes, some failures, but moving forwards and learning the whole way.
How we built it
We built our game using Godot, an open-source, cross-platform game engine used for developing 2D and 3D games.
Challenges we ran into
One of the challenges we ran into was deciding how to build the game. After consulting peers and advisors, we decided to use Godot, but were then faced with another challenge. A learning curve with the platform. We all needed more knowledge on how to use Godot accurately, and had to take some extra time to learn how to use it before we could actually build our game effectively.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're proud to present the "finished" product of roughly 36 hours of work. While it could still use some more features and is not as advanced as we originally wanted, it does work and conveys the main idea of what we originally wanted it to.
What we learned
GUI platforms are not very easy to learn in a short time. But some are easier than others.
What's next for Miner Run
With more time, our game can be upgraded to include more features and different levels corresponding to higher degree achievements. There are endless possibilities for difficulty levels ranging from easy to extreme. In short, there is a lot of room for improvement.
