Inspiration

While brainstorming, I discovered the environmental and health impacts of mining, particularly the damage to marine life caused by improper waste disposal. Mining generates 30 times more waste than a city, and if not managed correctly, it can have devastating consequences. Restoring post-mining land is crucial, and I wanted to create a solution that addresses both environmental concerns and miners' health.

What it does

MineGuard monitors miners' health, tracks air quality, classifies soil and gives tips on restoring it, manages waste, and provides tools for mapping and planning mining sites.

How we built it

I developed the front end with React JS and integrated the back end using Firebase. The AI part was OpenAI API for text generation and I trained custom models of classification, forest tree regressions, decision tree classifiers, etc. to optimize model accuracy. These were implemented into the project using a node express backend.

Challenges we ran into

Working solo meant juggling multiple roles, which was time-consuming. The biggest challenge was sourcing datasets to train the AI models effectively.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

I built a functional prototype for MineGuard, which acts as a real safety tool for mining sites. Along the way, I learned a lot, made new friends, and broadened my technical skills.

What we learned

I gained a deeper understanding of the importance of waste management in mining, especially in Canada. I came to know of the impacts mining has on nature and it urged me to do something to help. I also picked up new technical skills, from using libraries to training AI models along with advanced CSS properties like clip-path and backface visibility.

What's next for MineGuard

I plan to incorporate computer vision to optimize ore extraction and use satellite data to assess environmental impact. This will enable better waste route planning before mining operations begin. Another crazy idea is to connect this to your mobile phone, so the AI model guides you with your normal mobile camera! The all-in-one app for Miners to log in to their shifts, educate them on-site, etc.
