Inspiration

Minecraft has always held a place in our hearts, so why not bring it into the real world with its iconic jukebox! By combining the nostalgia of Minecraft with embedded systems and RFID technology, we set out to build a physical jukebox inspired by the game.

What it does

Minecraft RF Jukebox is a physical music player that uses RFID technology to identify music discs and play their corresponding songs. When a disc containing an RFID tag is placed into the jukebox, an RFID reader scans its unique ID. An ESP32 processes that ID, matches it to a stored song, and retrieves the audio file from a microSD card. The song then plays through speakers built into the jukebox.

Each RFID-tagged disc acts as a physical music selection, allowing users to interact with their music in a way inspired by Minecraft's original jukebox mechanic.

How we built it

We built the jukebox using an ESP32 microcontroller, an MFRC522 RFID reader, RFID tags, a microSD card module, a MAX98357A I2S audio amplifier, and speakers.

The ESP32 is the brain of the system, connecting the different hardware components and coordinating the playback process. The RFID reader scans each disc's tag, and the ESP32 uses the tag's unique identifier to determine which audio file to play from the microSD card. The audio is thensent through the I2S interface to the amplifier, which drives the speakers.

Finally, we assembled the electronics inside a custom 8x8 cube enclosure inspired by Minecraft's iconic block design, with the speakers positioned to play audio from inside of the box.

Challenges we ran into

One of the biggest challenges was getting all the hardware components to work together reliably. We had to trouble shoot communication between the ESP32, RFID reader, and microSD card while also ensuring that the RFID tags triggered the correct file.

Audio playback was also another challenge. We encountered crackling and low-volume output, which required us to investigate our audio configuration, wiring, and hardware.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of tunring a familiar Minecraft mechanic into a working physical device! Especially creating a system where physical tagged discs can select different songs, making music playback feel like an actual Minecraft jukebox.

What we learned

Through this project we gained hands-on experience integrating multiple embedded hardware components into a single system. We learned more about RFID communication, SPI interfaces, I2S audio, file storage, and controlling audio playback with an ESP32.

We also learned the importance of hardware debugging, especially when working with audi circuits, power connections, and multiple modules. We also saw how software and hardware can come together to transform a creative idea into an interactive experience.

What's next for Minecraft RF Jukebox

We would love to expand the jukebox with more music discs and additional audio tracks, making the experience closer to the original game. Future improvements could include a disc-ejection mechanism and more polished sound output. We can also improve internal wiring and electronics for a more compact design.
