Context
Mining Log Book Day 94:
It took me so long. I finally found gold ores in this cave. This amount of gold can provide food for my family for the next 100 years or so! I could then leave for the Bahamas...The Bahamas, there's such a sweet ring to it.
I hear something crumbling.... this doesn't seem right.
Inspiration
We were inspired by multiple classic games of the 8-bit and 16-bit era. From Megaman (which we re-skined), to Tetris, old-school games have always been our jam. The procedurally generated content was inspired by modern roguelikes/roguelites (such as Spellunky).
What it does
The gameplay is pretty straight forward. If you've ever played Super Mario games, you'll feel right at home. It's a platformer, but the twist is that platforms are falling. You'll need to navigate through them in order to reach the top - al the while avoiding to be crushed.
What we learned
We learned many new C# functionalities and ways to troubleshoot our problems during this Hack-o-Thon. Our biggest challenge was to procedurally generate the platforms in cubic forms at the proper rate. Since it was our first Hack-o-Thon we felt a bit overwhelmed but it turned out okay in the end. We also had problems displaying the sprites and animation that we created (they are still not correctly used). We also made an HTML website using CSS and html5. It can be found here: http://minerunner.bitballoon.com/ (currently not working)
What's next for MINE RUNNER
If we were to continue working on this project, the followings are what we'd do first:
-Put water/lava at the bottom of the scene just so you die when you touch it.
-Put an animation scene, a menu and a high score
-Use properly the sprites created
-Create levels and patterns to actually feel like accomplishing something when playing this game.
Note
The project is currently on hiatus, a playable demo will soon be available on itch.io.
