Inspiration We all know the feeling: opening a laptop to study, only to lose two hours to mindless scrolling. For students, this invisible time-loss drives digital burnout. Traditional apps try to fix this by blocking sites and inducing guilt, which strips away human agency. Inspired by Dario Amodei’s Machines of Loving Grace, we built MindTrace AI to act as a mirror, not a cage—empowering choices rather than making them.

What it does MindTrace AI is an AI-powered habit coach that helps students protect their focus and reduce stress.

The Dashboard: Translates browsing history into real-time Focus and Burnout scores.

AI Insights: Claude analyzes the context of habits, turning raw data into compassionate insights (e.g., "You lose focus around 2 PM; try protecting your morning window.").

The Coach: Detects rising distraction and suggests real-time, screen-free breaks.

Ethical Safeguards: A pure self-reflection tool, not clinical therapy, designed to keep users in control.

How we built it We built a responsive MVP using React and Tailwind CSS for a clean, calming UI. For the backend logic, we integrated Claude's advanced reasoning capabilities to translate raw timestamps and domains into empathetic, highly personalized coaching without using aggressive "productivity" language.

Challenges we ran into Nailing the AI's tone was tough. We had to carefully prompt Claude so it sounded like a supportive peer, rather than a judgmental boss or a medical professional. We also had to design an architecture that prioritizes user privacy so sensitive browsing data stays secure.

Accomplishments that we're proud of We successfully reframed screen-time tracking from a "surveillance and punishment" model to a "compassion and self-awareness" model. Integrating Claude to generate genuinely helpful, non-shaming insights from raw data was a massive win for our team.

What we learned We learned that how data is delivered matters just as much as the data itself. A raw chart showing a student they wasted 3 hours causes anxiety; an empathetic AI insight pointing out a pattern empowers them to change it.

What's next for MindTrace AI Our next step is building a secure, local-first browser extension to automate data collection without compromising privacy. From there, we plan to partner with university student unions to run live beta tests and help real students reclaim their time.
