Inspiration

I use native note apps every day to capture random thoughts and ideas—on both my computer and my phone. They’re fast and always available, which makes them great for quick capture. But over time, I started to feel lost.

Notes piled up quickly. Thoughts were scattered across devices. I could write things down, but revisiting and making sense of them later became difficult. The problem wasn’t capture—it was clarity.

That frustration became the reason I created Mindstream.

What it does

Mindstream is a lightweight thinking app designed to help capture thoughts freely first, then gradually surface patterns and insights over time. Instead of forcing structure upfront, Mindstream lets ideas flow naturally and helps you reflect, organize, and connect them when you’re ready.

How we built it

Mindstream was built with a focus on simplicity and low friction. I started with a minimal writing experience and iterated from there—testing small ideas, refining interactions, and keeping the interface intentionally quiet. The goal was to remove distractions and make thinking feel natural, not overwhelming.

Challenges we ran into

One of the biggest challenges was balancing freedom and structure. Too much structure made writing feel rigid.
Too little structure made everything feel messy again.

Finding the right middle ground—where users feel comfortable capturing thoughts while still gaining clarity later—required multiple iterations and constant simplification.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Designed a calm, distraction-free writing experience
  • Created a flow that supports both quick capture and reflection
  • Turned a personal frustration into a working product
  • Maintained simplicity while supporting meaningful use cases

What we learned

  • Capturing thoughts is easy; understanding them is harder
  • Good tools shouldn’t demand organization before thinking
  • Simplicity requires more iteration, not less
  • Designing for reflection is different from designing for productivity

What's next for Mindstream

Next, I want to explore deeper ways to help users recognize patterns in their thoughts—without making the app feel heavy or complex. That includes improving reflection tools, experimenting with gentle organization features, and continuing to refine the core experience so Mindstream stays simple, flexible, and human.
