Inspiration
I’ve always felt like there aren't many good websites that actually have the kind of notes we use in college. Most sites just have printed materials or PDFs that don’t really reflect what’s taught in class. Personally, I find it easier to understand stuff when it’s explained in lecture notes or handwritten material. But it’s hard to find those online. I also believe finding everything about a topic that's uploaded by the students itself who are currently studying will help others too find the newest material instead of the old material we find online. That’s what inspired me to build MindStash.
What it does
MindStash is a place where students can upload and share their notes as images or PDFs. Others can search for what they need or filter by program, branch, and semester. It makes sharing academic materials easier and more community-driven.
How I built it
I built it as a full stack MERN web app.
- Frontend: React with Tailwind CSS and Framer Motion
- Backend: Node.js with Express
- Database: MongoDB
- File storage: Cloudinary for storing images and PDFs
- Authentication: Manual login/register and Google OAuth
- Extra features: AI chatbot using Gemini, reporting system, moderation dashboard
Challenges I ran into
This was my first hackathon. I started pretty late, didn’t have teammates, and had to build everything on my own. Managing everything from backend APIs to frontend UI was a bit overwhelming at first. But I kept going and eventually got it all working.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
Getting the whole thing working on time is something I’m proud of. Especially since I had to handle everything alone, from design and logic to deployment. I even managed to add AI features and a working moderation system.
What I learned
I learned how to properly organize and build a full stack app under pressure. I got better at structuring backend code, handling file uploads, creating reusable frontend components, and dealing with real user flows like reporting and moderation. I also learned how to work with third-party services like Cloudinary and Gemini AI.
What's next for MindStash
- AI-based note summarization
- Email verification for uploads
- Comment system for materials
- More advanced moderation tools
- Responsive improvements for mobile users
