Inspiration
We were inspired by the overwhelming amount of mental health issues that run in a High School like ours where students are always being pushed to be better. In the past four years, our High School has lost four students to suicide and unfortunately, there was nothing we as a community could do for them.
What it does
Our app has three basic features: Journaling, Meditation, and Stress Relieving Audio. Each is a highly recommended method to improve one's mental health in a time of struggle.
How we built it
We used the React Native framework and the Expo Client to create an app that is compatible with both Android and iOS users to ensure that no user is left behind.
Challenges we ran into
We struggled with finding documentation as React Native is a relatively new language. Additionally, since we are newer coders, we struggled with using GitHub for our final submission.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud that we were able to get a final app produced. We did not take any shortcuts and are proud of how our app serves the people.
What we learned
We learned a lot about good coding practices, especially when dealing with multiple app components in React. We also learned how to use programming frameworks appropriately and effectively to create an app.
What's next for MindSpot - Mental Health App
We hope to continue developing our app and bringing in other elements of mental health. One key idea that we were unable to bring in this time around was the ability to anonymously communicate with others struggling with similar issues. This involves systems that we as coders are not familiar with yet.
