Inspiration

What if learning mathematics felt less like solving problems on a worksheet and more like uncovering secrets in a game?

Some of the most fascinating mathematical ideas challenge our intuition. Yet they're often introduced through intimidating formulas and abstract explanations, making it difficult to appreciate what makes them so surprising.

We wanted to change that.

Inspired by classic probability puzzles, game theory, and logic challenges, we created Mindplay, a fantasy-inspired world where players learn by exploring, experimenting, and discovering unexpected patterns.

Our philosophy is simple: You don't have to be a genius. Just be curious.

What it does

Mindplay transforms counterintuitive mathematical concepts into interactive adventures.

Rather than presenting formulas to memorize, Mindplay encourages players to make predictions, test their intuition, observe outcomes, and gradually uncover the reasoning behind them.

Players explore a fantasy world filled with mathematical challenges and guided by playful interactions and moments of discovery.

How we built it

We built Mindplay as an interactive web application using React and TypeScript, combining mathematically grounded game mechanics with a fantasy-inspired interface.

Our development focused on three key areas:

  1. Building the mathematical foundations: We implemented logic based on probability, Monte Carlo simulations, exact probability calculations, and race comparison systems. This ensures that player interactions reflect the underlying mathematical principles.

  2. Transforming abstract concepts into playable experiences: Instead of just displaying mathematical explanations, we designed interactions that let players form hypotheses, experiment with outcomes, receive feedback, and gradually build their understanding.

  3. Creating an Immersive Learning Environment We developed a magical, fantasy-inspired interface featuring an explorable world map, illustrated game elements, animated interactions, and guided dialogue from the Island Keeper.

Challenges we ran into

  1. One of our biggest challenges was determining how much information to reveal and when. Providing players with formulas too early could eliminate the excitement of discovery, while offering too little guidance could leave them feeling confused. We carefully balanced exploration, hints, and explanations so players could develop their intuition without feeling lost.

  2. Another challenge is preserving mathematical accuracy within interactive gameplay. In The Royal Races, for example, players must infer rankings based only on previous race results without knowing the hidden speeds. Maintaining these information constraints was essential to preserving the puzzle's logic.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Our greatest achievement was creating two playable mathematical adventures that transform abstract reasoning into an experience for players.

In Dice Duel, players uncover a surprising probability paradox through experimentation rather than being told the answer.

In The Royal Races, players develop and test their own strategies using logical deduction to narrow down possibilities.

We're proud to have brought these experiences together in a cohesive fantasy world that gives Mindplay its own personality.

What we learned

Through Building Mindplay, we learned that making mathematics accessible is about more than just simplifying explanations. It's also about designing experiences that help people develop their own intuition.

We learned to approach educational game design from the player's perspective. What would spark someone's curiosity? What would encourage them to try again? When should we reveal the underlying mathematics?

We also gained a deeper appreciation for how visual hierarchy, responsive feedback, progressive hints, and clear navigation shape the learning experience.

What's next for Mindplay

Mindplay is just the beginning of a much larger world. We plan to expand it into a collection of mathematical adventures where each new island introduces a different way of thinking.

Future challenges could cover conditional probability, game theory, optimization, optimal stopping, and quantitative finance through interactive scenarios.

We also hope to create more personalized learning experiences where players can receive guidance based on their reasoning and progress at their own pace.

Our ultimate goal is for Mindplay to become a place where mathematical curiosity is accessible to everyone, regardless of their background or confidence in math.

Roll the dice. Trust your instincts. Discover the logic.
