Inspiration

The inspiration behind MindMosaic stems from a desire to improve the quality of life for individuals affected by dementia or those genetically predisposed to it. By engaging these individuals early on with activities that stimulate their cognitive functions, we aim to slow the progression of the disease, giving them more time to experience life and reducing the severity of their symptoms. This project is a heartfelt attempt to support people in preserving their cognitive abilities for as long as possible.

What it Does

MindMosaic is designed to creatively and analytically engage the mind through interactive activities that stimulate brain function. By offering tasks that challenge both hemispheres of the brain, the app encourages neuroplasticity, which helps delay cognitive decline. The ultimate goal is to foster brain stimulation before dementia reaches its later stages, providing users with a tool to stay mentally active and engaged.

How We Built It

MindMosaic was developed using a combination of Xcode and Swift to design and structure the app, while Firebase was integrated to manage user authentication and data storage. Additionally, we incorporated the Sugoku API to bring engaging puzzles into the app, which served as one of the tools for mental stimulation. Each component was thoughtfully selected to enhance the user experience and functionality.

Challenges We Ran Into

One of the significant challenges we faced was the difficulty of synchronizing our work on Xcode due to different laptop updates across the team. This technical mismatch meant that we couldn’t work seamlessly together. Additionally, some older APIs we wanted to use became incompatible with the newer system updates, rendering them obsolete. As a result, we had to build many features, especially the games, from scratch. Moreover, being first-time iOS developers, we faced a steep learning curve when integrating complex elements like the GPT API, which added to the challenge.

Accomplishments That We're Proud Of

Despite being newcomers to iOS development, we successfully built a fully functioning app, incorporating APIs and user authentication services from the ground up. We’re particularly proud of our teamwork and communication, which allowed us to brainstorm and share ideas effectively. Our collaboration and willingness to work through problems together made the experience both productive and fulfilling.

What We Learned

The project taught us the importance of perseverance and problem-solving. Even when confronted with technical challenges, such as outdated equipment or differences in our tech stacks, we came up with creative solutions that, while not always the most efficient, worked for us in the moment. This not only helped us finish the app but also strengthened our bond as a team. Learning to adapt to circumstances and keep pushing forward was a critical takeaway from this experience.

What's Next for MindMosaic

The next phase for MindMosaic involves scaling the app for broader public use by making it available on the Apple App Store. To achieve this, we need to implement more robust, scalable technologies, such as MongoDB for better data storage, and faster APIs to enhance performance. Our vision is to refine the app so it can serve a larger audience while maintaining its core mission of supporting mental health and cognitive function.
