Inspiration
College life can be overwhelming. Between academics, social pressure, and constant digital noise, many students struggle to check in with themselves emotionally. Often, these feelings go unnoticed because existing solutions feel too clinical, complicated, or intimidating.
MindMate was inspired by the idea that mental wellness doesn’t always need therapy-level tools — sometimes, it just needs a simple, friendly space to pause, reflect, and feel heard.
What it does
MindMate is a lightweight, AI-powered mental wellness web app designed for college students.
It allows users to:
- Quickly check in with their emotions
- Reflect on their day through simple mood selection
- Receive supportive, non-clinical AI-generated reflections
- Track emotional patterns over time through basic analytics
The goal is to encourage self-awareness and healthy habits without overwhelming the user.
How we built it
MindMate was built as a modern web application using Google technologies:
- Firebase Authentication for secure and seamless user login
- Firebase Firestore to store mood check-ins and reflections
- Google Gemini API to generate personalized, supportive reflections based on user-selected emotions
- React + Tailwind CSS for a clean, responsive, and calming user interface
The application follows a modular component-based structure to ensure scalability and maintainability.
Challenges we ran into
One major challenge was designing an AI experience that felt supportive without sounding clinical or judgmental.
Another challenge was integrating real-time AI responses while keeping the application lightweight and fast.
We also had to carefully balance simplicity and usefulness — ensuring the app stayed easy to use while still providing meaningful insights.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Successfully integrated Google Gemini API to generate real-time, personalized reflections
- Built a fully functional end-to-end flow using Firebase Auth and Firestore
- Designed a calm, student-friendly UI that prioritizes emotional comfort
- Delivered a complete, working prototype within a limited timeframe
What we learned
Through this project, we learned how to:
- Design AI systems with empathy and responsibility
- Integrate multiple Google technologies into a single production-ready application
- Translate a real-world student problem into a practical digital solution
- Balance UX, AI, and backend systems effectively in a hackathon environment
What's next for MindMate
Future plans for MindMate include:
- More detailed mood analytics and trends
- Optional journaling features
- Campus-specific resource recommendations
- Push notifications for gentle daily check-ins
- Expanded personalization using AI insights
MindMate has the potential to grow into a trusted daily wellness companion for students.
