Inspiration
From our previous classes and our experience growing up as five women, we have been encouraged to talk about our emotions and mental wellbeing. However, when discussing with our male counterparts, we found that their experience was not quite the same. From there, we looked into research to see how this could affect them later on in life and if there are differences in quality of life.
What it does
Our product, MindMap seeks to address the education gap in self-care and vulnerability for young boys. We want to provide education and support earlier in boys' lives to help boys live happier lives from a young age. MindMap is a resource for teachers and students to provide guidance specifically to male students on wellbeing. This is achieved through 3 main pillars of support: lesson plans and resources shared amongst teachers, a daily wellbeing prompt, and an online discussion board This resource hopes to create more resistance to masculine norms for boys as they age, so that when they need to seek out support they are able to.
How we built it
We built it using figma to demonstrate the website's landing page and prototypes for our app's landing page and different features.
Challenges we ran into
All of us are first year computer science students in our first term so we did not have much coding experience. I believe that is what made it a bit hard.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Being able to create the prototype from scratch and address an area that we are all passionate about!
What we learned
It's okay to not have experience, but as long as we try and put in effort while having fun that is all that matters. Also, there is a difference in the proportion of males vs females who are seeking out mental wellness help.
What's next for MindMap
We hope to code and create the app and learn from languages. Furthermore, we hope to collaborate with other researchers examining this area and help fine-tune some of the ideas we have! We believe this is a good idea that could help a lot of people live healthier lives and learn to create stronger relationships with themselves and others.
