We start by setting the session intentions
-
Then we go through each cycle, starting with a plan for what exactly we'll do
-
The app will notify us and play a chime when the 40m are done
-
At which point we can reflect on our cycle and choose to continue or finish the session
-
Sessions also have their reflection moment
-
And we get a breakdown of each session
-
And a full history of all of our work ✨
Inspiration
In 2020-21 I had the highest output of my career. Lots of focus and well-developed objectives.
Eventually, managing people, getting more and more distracted, I lost that magic...
And reflecting upon it, I remembered taking notes and going through Work Cycles was a big part of that success. At the time, I used Roam Research as the tool to follow these cycles, but that's cumbersome and I don't use that note-taking app anymore.
The Bolt hackathon was the perfect opportunity to bring back this magic productivity with a bespoke work cycles tool...
Meet MindLock ✨
What it does
Through a structured set of questions and cycles of work, MindLock helps you focus and get clarity on what needs to get done, and how to do it. No matter if programming the next hackathon winner, writing a piece for a newspaper, building a woodcraft project, or creating an epic D&D world - any challenging work fits!
How we built it
Bolt all the way. With data stored in the browser via Dexie, iterating on the schema and functionality was trivial. My first successful experience with vibe coding 🎉
Challenges we ran into
When fully vibecoding, adding new features sometimes breaks existing ones, and you have no visibility into how or why. I found that for the complexity of this project, though, prompting Bolt eventually fixed the issue.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Creating a product that I actually use - and also using that product to focus while improving the product itself. Dogfooding is real ⚡
What we learned
Vibecoding is a viable option, even to me as a developer with 10yrs of experience and lots of passion for the craft of software engineering! Also, Dexie + client-only routing with react-router-dom is beautifully simple and delightful to use.
What's next for MindLock
This is mostly a complete project. As I use it, there are always small UX paper cuts that I end up fixing with a prompt or two, but that's about it. The only new real feature I'd like to add is, perhaps, syncing data across devices. But honestly I haven't had that requirement myself, being content with the ability to export usage history and restore it in another browser.
