Inspiration:

Recently a very sad story happened in my home city, Almaty, Kazakhstan where many teenagers died because of high academic and social pressure. And that served me as an inspiration to develop MindHelp Bot" It also showed a desperate shortage of child accessible mental health support, some of the most stressed out kids on earth with little ether direction. I created MindHelp Bot with this inspiration and love for using technology to solve real-world problems, as an easily accessible, scalable solution that could assist students in getting through academic work while progressing smoothly through mental illness.

What it does:

MindHelp Bot Key Features

  1. You can Combat Stress with AI-Powered Conversations: The bot reads the user and responds to help by providing supportive and empathetic conversations powered by the most intelligent Artificial Intelligence to be a trained personal mental health assistant. AI listens, provides coaching and helps the users distressed with stress and emotions.

  2. Verified Sources about Psychology: Includes the latest research by licensed psychologists to help users meet important needs such as sleep hygiene, stress management and a healthy lifestyle.

MindHelp Bot combines artificial intelligence and information from trusted sources to provide users with immediate emotional support, as well as expert advice on keeping mental health in order.

How we built it

Telegram was selected due to its popularity in Kazakhstan and accessibility for users so the bot is built on the Telegram platform.

AI development: AI has been trained on how to respond to people's feelings, so at least there is context for the conversation. To do this, we have created dialogue channels so that the AI can give personal advice and at the same time make it clear that it does not replace professionals.

Information from verified sources: We have worked with the research of licensed/clinical psychologists to provide you with quality information. This guide was built into the bot in the form of modules that users could access.

The bot was built on an asynchronous architecture using an asynchronous Python framework called Aiogram. We managed to create a bot that is highly responsive, scalable and can handle multiple conversations simultaneously without any delays (added for a clearer user interface and UX).

User-Friendly Interface: We created an easy-to-use interface inside of Telegram, so that the experience is both intuitive and approachable even with younger users, allowing for help to be as close as a message.

Challenges we ran into:

One of the hardest parts was figuring out how to keep it feeling empathetic and human-like, while working within the constraints of natural language processing (NLP). This was pretty complicated to make sure the bot has not only responded in a supportive, non-invasive manner. Moreover, getting and incorporating real psychological pointers that are identified with the configuration on kids in an edible arrangement was a hard exercise as we needed to guarantee that the data was dependable just as fitting for all age groups.

What we have created and are proud of:

We are most proud of the fact that the answers created with the help of artificial intelligence are based on support and empathy. The latter has already become possible thanks to the research of professors and certified psychologists, which ensured the provision of correct and very useful advice. Another important achievement for us was the creation of a tool with which we could communicate with schoolchildren, adopting their habit of using Telegram.

What we learned:

We have realized the importance of humanizing technology, especially when dealing with sensitive issues such as mental health. It became clear that users needed more than just automatic responses—they needed a platform that truly supported and cared for them. The project also showed us the value of research by mental health professionals to ensure that technological solutions bring real benefits.

What's next for MindHelp Bot:

We plan to expand MindHelp Bot’s functionality by incorporating more interactive features, such as daily mental health check-ins, mood tracking, and the ability to connect with human counselors for more serious issues. Additionally, we aim to localize the bot in multiple languages to reach a broader audience, as well as continuously update the advice modules with new, relevant content from psychologists. Finally, we hope to partner with educational institutions across Kazakhstan to integrate MindHelp Bot into schools as part of a larger mental health initiative.
