Inspiration 💡
Upon learning about the theme of "Mental Health", our team immediately delved into brainstorming numerous app ideas, each aimed at providing support for people in need. Among them, we found diverse and complex functions that could help anyone struggling with mental health issues. Mindful Mentor is a culmination of all these innovative ideas.
Undoubtedly, mental health has emerged as a widespread and serious concern in recent years. The COVID-19 pandemic has shed light on this dark topic, compelling our modern society to take decisive action. As a result, we proudly present Mindful Mentor, our response to this pressing need.
As mentioned earlier, Mindful Mentor represents a dynamic fusion of ideas. Each team member's contribution was pivotal in shaping this comprehensive "All-in-One" app, designed to cater to everyone grappling with mental health challenges.
For many high school students like ourselves, discussing mental health remains a sensitive subject. This is precisely why we constructed our app with a singular focus on the individual, allowing users to seek help discreetly, in contrast to traditional methods.
What it does ⚙️
Mindful Mentor is a versatile app designed to address various mental health-related issues through its four core functions. The first function is the "centers" feature, which proves to be a valuable tool for users by utilizing their location to find nearby mental health facilities through the integration of the Google Maps API. This ensures easy access to professional help when needed.
One of the key highlights of Mindful Mentor is its interactive chatbot named "Mindful Mate." Powered by OpenAI's Davinci 3 model, Mindful Mate offers users a quick and convenient way to seek answers to their mental health-related questions and enhance their knowledge on the subject matter.
Mindful Mentor also caters to users' relaxation and well-being through two media-related tools. The "Meditation" feature offers short yet effective meditation-themed videos specifically curated for mental health purposes. This ensures that users can find direct and relevant resources to help them decompress and reduce stress.
In addition to meditation videos, the app also provides an extensive article catalog. By integrating the "News" API, Mindful Mentor offers a sophisticated system for browsing and reading mental health articles. Users can access informative content to broaden their understanding of mental health topics and find enjoyment in exploring various aspects of the subject.
Upon launching the app, users are greeted with a clean and minimalistic interface. They can easily continue reading previously accessed articles or seamlessly navigate between different functions of the app. Mindful Mentor prioritizes user experience and accessibility, making it a valuable and comprehensive resource for individuals seeking support and information on mental health matters.
How we built it / Distribution of Work
Rishabh: Used React Native, the Google Maps API, and the News API for various functions and parts of the app.
Neil: Used React Native and the Youtube Data API in order to create the meditation media section of the app.
Nick: Used React Native and the OpenAI API to create the chatbot for the app as well as helped format various parts of the app.
Challenges we ran into 😤
One of the main struggles we ran into was the time constraint. The app is complex, requiring multiple pages and API’s in order to work. Furthermore, we wanted to create the best interface and app possible in the time we were given, which proved a challenge for the given time frame.
When it came to programming, we had to work to create a lot of advanced features which required us to work day and night, combining our skills to make the app.
Accomplishments that we're proud of 🥳
Creating MindfulMentor proved to be an incredibly enriching experience for our team. During the development process, we not only gained valuable expertise in React Native but also deepened our understanding of the complexities surrounding mental health. Through extensive research sessions, we identified the most critical needs of individuals dealing with mental health issues, which, in turn, allowed us to connect with and empathize with our peers. This journey of discovery and learning was a significant accomplishment, which reinforced our commitment to creating a meaningful and impactful app for anyone struggling with mental health.
What we learned 📚
During this hackathon, we’ve clearly strengthened our programming skills, as well as learned about something very prominent in our modern-day society. The topic of mental health wasn’t something we were all comfortable talking about. Through this project, we’ve deepened our understanding of what to do when faced with mental health issues, and have learned how to help someone in need in the most responsible way.
What's next for MindfulMentor 🌎
In the future, we want to make MindfulMentor available to everybody via the App Store/Google Play Store. Additionally, we want to better the interface of the app to make it more user-friendly. No matter what we decide to do with the app, we plan to continue the development of MindfulMentor even after this hackathon ends.
