Inspiration

Our Inspiration was to help people stay off of social media. We were all frequent social media users and realized that we should come up with some sort of fun interactive activity that could help inspire not only us, but many people out there so suffer from social media addiction to pick up productive activities that could be as simple as just reading a book, biking with your friends, or even taking rest. We would like people to join us in our journey to limit our social media usage. While it will be a long and hard process, it will be worth it in the long run. We aim to make the process interactive and slightly competitive in a friendly manner for users to gain the motivation to spend less time while having fun.

What it does

Our web app aims to help people reduce their social media usage by setting realistic and measurable goals. By limiting daily usage and tracking progress, users can climb the daily leaderboard and earn incentives. The app also fosters a supportive community where users can connect, share experiences, and provide valuable feedback. We encourage users to shift their focus to offline activities through a reward system, offering discounts and exclusive content. Personalized recommendations and a Well-being Assistant assist users in finding alternative activities aligned with their interests. The assistant tracks and provides statistics on their social media usage, while sending positive messages as they cut down their time online. Hopefully, by the end, most users will decrease their time spent on social media substantially and will be more motivated to naturally pick up activities that may be more beneficial to them.

How we built it

Before we began actually coding and creating the project, we created a google document to help brainstorm some potential features that we could incorporate into our project. When it came time to actually build it, we all split up the work where Kevin would work on the UI/UX elements, Cherry worked on the back-end development, and Jayant planned the logistics and the other aspects of the hackathon and project. We’ve used the Live Share feature of VSCode to collaborate on the project together.

Challenges we ran into

Kevin: For me, this was my first time doing UI/UX design since my teammates were more comfortable with Python, Javascript, etc. Furthermore, this was all our first time doing a hackathon, and for me, I didn’t really start learning coding until high school, but I feel like this was definitely a great learning experience even if we might not end up even doing that well. Cherry: I did not have too many challenges because I was experienced, but the syntax was kind of difficult to deal with at times. It would take up to 10 minutes sometimes to overcome errors. My time zone was different from my teammates as I was in India, so it was difficult meeting up with them to work. I had to often stay up late to work and it was very tiring. Jayant: I was fairly new to this, my teammates were definitely more experienced than me with javascript and vscode. I normally code on eclipse so it was all new to me. This is also my first time doing a hackathon and it was a lot of fun working with my teammates even though I just met them. This was a great experience even though we did run into difficulties with coding often, and I hope to do more hackathons in the future.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Kevin: I recently started learning web-development and also UI ever since school ended this summer, but I feel like this hackathon really helped me gain a better understanding of web design and such. Jayant: I was able to figure out the idea and outline. We got the plan quickly and were able to proceed with articulating and presenting it. It helped me get a better idea of how to make our web app more unique than others. Cherry: I have been doing web-development for 2 years now, so it was pretty easy for me to get started on this. It was great helping out my team members code this along with me, and I feel pretty accomplished doing that.

What we learned

We learned how to develop a web app using javascript and html css using vscode most efficiently. We also learned how to overcome challenges we faced along the way.

What's next for MindfulMediaVerse

In hindsight, as a group, despite lacking lots of coding and competitive experience, we feel as if we didn't push ourselves enough in making this the best we could in the past two days. Looking past this hackathon, we will definitely work on making it way better and hopefully even try publishing this app for other people to use.
