Inspiration

All of us are high school students, and we have all had similar experiences of stressing out for exams or projects. We’ve also seen some of our peers and family face other addictions and mental health challenges. Because of this, the app greatly resonates with us and would help us along with our peers and almost anyone who encounters this app.

What it does

It provides resources for those struggling with their mental health, addictions, or anxiety/depression by providing a meditation page, addictions page, journal page, and a chatbot that can talk you through your problems.

How we built it

We coded this app using Android Studio and Java, with each member of the team working on our pages separately. We used our prior programming experience and general design knowledge to efficiently design and code the app. In the process, we learned how to use Canva and OpenAI Keys as well.

Challenges we ran into

Our biggest issue was the time it took to merge everything into one GitHub repository. We realized in hindsight that we should have started by doing everything in one GitHub repository. We could not find a good solution, unfortunately, which meant we had to copy and paste everything. However, we did learn a couple of key things that would help us later in the project. We had some errors with pages we only noticed once we started to duplicate everything and were able to fix the errors immediately.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are extremely proud of how we managed to go from having no idea about app development to being confident enough to build a whole app of the quality we did. We were able to make all the pages flow together seamlessly without any kind of glitches or bugs. We also learned how to talk to professionals in the industry and gained some connections with therapists and meditation teachers that we hope to continue talking with to keep improving our app. “I initially thought that this was just a small project by a few high schoolers but this is probably the most complete mental health app I’ve seen on the market. I’ve even let some of my patients try and they all say the journal page has especially been useful along with the chatbot. I hope they continue to develop this app and continue expanding!” Suchitra Narasimhan - Therapist from Pruitt Health

What we learned

In terms of programming, we learned how to make buttons that link to other pages, including image buttons. We also learned how to make a page scroll both horizontally and vertically. More generally, we learned how to both develop an app and use Android Studio. In terms of Design, we learned how to use Canva and make our pages look more aesthetically pleasing by using certain colors that contrast each other, and how to make the shapes and layouts more clean. Outside of design and coding, we also learned soft skills such as how to make a coherent video and how to pitch our app to the real world, skills we will be able to use no matter what field we go into.

What's next for MindfulMe

In the future, we aim to enhance MindfulMe's accessibility and diversity initiatives on a much greater scale, ensuring that our platform is inclusive and equitable for all users. This includes expanding language support, implementing features for diverse cultural backgrounds, and collaborating with communities worldwide to tailor our services to their unique needs. We also plan to expand our database with a greater variety of resources that can better help our users with their mental health.
