Inspiration
We wanted to create an AI-powered tool that promotes sustainability in everyday shopping. Seeing how often people buy online without knowing the environmental impact inspired us to build something that makes eco-awareness easy and accessible.
What it does
CodeRed Eco is a web app that calculates an eco score and carbon footprint for a product based on its name or URL. It also visualizes the product’s environmental impact over time, helping users make more sustainable purchasing decisions.
How we built it
We built the app using React, TypeScript, and Vite for the frontend. Google Gemini API powers the AI-driven insights, while Chart.js visualizes sustainability data. We followed a clear SDLC process: planned the scope, analyzed user needs, designed the UI, implemented core features, tested user interactions, and deployed the web app for easy access.
Challenges we ran into
We initially planned a Chrome extension that would display the eco score directly on Amazon product pages. However, Amazon’s bot-blocking policies prevented us from accessing product data directly. We also faced time and data constraints, which limited our ability to cover every product.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We successfully pivoted from the Chrome extension idea to a functional and user-friendly web app. We built an AI-powered system that simplifies sustainability data and presents it in a clear, engaging way. Our visualization feature helps users see their impact at a glance.
What we learned
We learned how to use prompt engineering effectively and how AI can both accelerate and challenge development. We discovered the importance of validating AI outputs, understanding its limitations, and respecting legal constraints such as platform data policies.
What's next for MindFulMarket
Next, we plan to expand product coverage, refine our AI scoring system, and eventually integrate the Chrome extension once data and access constraints are resolved. We also hope to add personalized sustainability insights for users over time.
