Inspiration

As researchers and students, we've experienced the growing challenge of staying focused in a world saturated with distractions. With the rise of social media and endless notifications, it's becoming harder to remain mindful and productive. Our passion for AI and technology, combined with a desire to make a positive impact, led us to create Mindful Workday with AI—an app that promotes focus, mindfulness, and emotional well-being using state-of-the-art AI.

What it does

Mindful Workday with AI is a fully functional web application that helps users maintain focus and monitor their emotional well-being throughout the day. By using AI, deep learning, and computer vision, the app analyzes real-time webcam images to detect whether the user is focused or distracted, as well as track emotional states like happiness or sadness. When prolonged distraction or sadness is detected, it sends a notification suggesting a breathing exercise. The app also generates personalized inspirational quotes and images using ChatGPT, tailored to the user’s mood and daily journals.

How we built it

We built Mindful Workday with AI from the ground up using a combination of AI and deep learning models for sentiment and attention analysis. For the web application, we used Flask, and integrated ChatGPT for generating personalized content. The app is designed with privacy in mind, relying on open-source, local models to ensure data is not sent to external servers. We took care to blend modern web technologies with robust AI capabilities, creating a seamless experience for the user.

Challenges we ran into

One of the key challenges was ensuring user privacy. We addressed this by using open-source models that run locally, preventing sensitive data from leaving the user’s device. Additionally, neither of us had prior experience in web development or using Flask. This meant we had to learn on the fly, often juggling multiple aspects of the project while picking up new skills. Despite the tight timeline, we managed to overcome these hurdles.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are incredibly proud that we were able to deliver a fully working application in less than two days! From learning Flask and web development to implementing advanced AI features, we successfully tackled every challenge that came our way. The app not only runs smoothly but also preserves user privacy—an important achievement given the complexity of the project.

What we learned

This project was a crash course in both technical and non-technical skills. On the technical side, we learned web programming, Flask, and how to integrate local AI models with a web interface. On the non-technical side, we improved our teamwork and time management skills. Working under pressure and dividing tasks effectively helped us stay focused and efficient throughout the process. These lessons will stay with us long after this project!

What's next for Mindful Workday with AI

Moving forward, we aim to expand Mindful Workday by adding more features, such as deeper goal-setting integrations and enhanced AI insights. We also plan to refine the user experience, making the app available on mobile platforms and adding more mindfulness techniques. The future holds exciting possibilities, and we can’t wait to continue improving the app to help even more people stay focused, mindful, and emotionally healthy.
