Inspiration

We were inspired by the Apple Health app, which features a mental health section that includes a mood tracker and brief questionnaires to check in on your mental health. We know that 20-40% of teenagers struggle with mental health issues, so we wanted to make an app/website to help them get through tough times.

What it does

Our website (that's meant to be an app) has a homescreen with three buttons labeled "Anxiety," "Depression," and "ADHD," the three most common mental health problems that students have. Each section has a list of symptoms and healthy coping mechanisms. The anxiety section has two extra parts, those being about anxiety attack symptoms and how to get through an attack. At the very bottom of the website, there are 5 buttons that are labeled "Home," "Affirmations," "Resources," "Breathing," and "Mood Tracker." The affirmations section has a feature where people can suggest affirmations, which are then sent to a website where we can monitor and confirm affirmations to ensure that they are appropriate and kind. The resources section has a short list of resources for teens to access and use as seen appropriate, and what is meant to be an "ask AI questions related to mental health," but instead of the AI answering directly, it provides a list of resources to guide the teen. The breathing section features a circle that gets bigger and smaller as a breathing exercise. If a teen is going through an anxiety attack or a panic attack, then they can try to match their breathing to the circle. Last but not least, we have the mood tracker. The mood tracker is a way for teens to track how they feel on a certain day, and they can add a small note to go alongside it. Those moods are then tracked, mentioning the date and note.

How we built it

We built our website with Visual Studio Code, and the languages HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. We first made an outline for the pages, split up the work, and edited the outlines to match what each page is meant to be.

Challenges we ran into

We struggled less with the code and more with the setup, specifically the live share extension on VS Code, which initially didn't allow us to view all of the pages of code independently. We ended up figuring out the issue and were able to collaborate on the code.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are most proud of figuring out the mood tracker, which we had to do a lot of troubleshooting on. It took us a while, but towards the end, we figured out the small typo that was causing all the problems and fixed it. Another feature we're proud of is the affirmation submission feature, which we linked with a website that shows us the affirmation that was submitted.

What we learned

We learned that we should make sure we have a good hotspot so that we don't have to wait a. long time for things to save and load. We also learned how to link separate websites to our code so that form submissions go straight there.

What's next for Mindful Moments (MiMo)

We want to make our website into a proper, full-fledged app that has more ways for users to interact with the app, and ways for them to suggest things to add from their personal experiences. We would also like to implement a monitored and properly trained AI feature.
