Inspiration

Through this creation, we wanted to address the issue of suffering burnout, as it is a problem that we might often experience as university students, and is also relevant to the general public — students and workers. The increasing use of online environments, as a consequence of the pandemic, also makes it much more difficult to be conscious of the workload being undertaken.
Thus, inspired by pre-existing to-do lists and calendar websites, we wanted to tackle this issue by adding features to lists and calendars that can help improve users’ well-beings.

What it does

The features of the website are as follows:

  • Adds tasks to task list and calendar
  • Task list records how much time the task is planned to take and how much time it actually took
  • Gives a warning if the total workload of the day exceeds the recommended standard
  • Gives recommendations for self-care activities and exercises depending on the busyness of the week and personal preference of the user
  • Informs users about signs of burnouts and how they could get help if they recognise the symptoms

How we built it

We built the website using HTML, CSS and Javascript. Most of the visual graphics were created using Adobe Illustrator. After jotting down initial ideas and planning the overall flow of the process, we split tasks between ourselves in such a way that we were able to work simultaneously together.

Challenges we ran into

Due to circumstances, this hackathon was done remotely. This was a challenge as it meant that communication was even more important, since we couldn’t tell what each of us was working on without letting each other know explicitly. Because of the difference in life schedules (and time zone differences), it was challenging, compared to if we had done this in person, for everyone to engage in discussions at the same time. Nevertheless, we utilised our group chat to stay in touch throughout the entire event.
Creating this website required using HTML, CSS, and Javascript. Since most of us were rather beginners at coding, learning new languages was definitely a part of the challenge. It was necessary for team members to help each other, and also search online to learn more about the languages during hacking.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We're proud that despite the challenging remote situation, we were able to create this final product that meets our initial goals. If more time is spent, then there would be more potential for this website as more features can be added, listed below. Learning new more about HTML, CSS, and Javascript on the way was also very accomplishing.

What we learned

  • Using HTML, CSS and Javascript to create a website;
  • Working effectively by distributing tasks and consistently communicating with each other.

What's next for Mindful Calendar

Add:

  • sign in and sign out options;
  • more variations to recommended wellness habits;
  • a feature that enables users to add wellness habits to their calendars;
  • a friend function
    • notify friends if users display signs of being burnt out.
